Shane Gillis apologized after accidentally dropping an F bomb during the latest episode of Saturday Night Live, a mistake that visibly startled the cast and live audience. The 38-year-old comedian made the slip during a Dr. Seuss sketch featuring Mikey Day and Andrew Dismukes.

Gillis played the son of the Cat in the Hat, portrayed by Day, while Dismukes appeared as Sam I Am. His character confronted Sam about repeatedly pressuring his father to try green eggs and ham.

'Hey, what the hell is wrong with you? My dad said he doesn't like green eggs and ham. Drop it. Walk away,' Gillis said during the sketch. The scene then veered sharply away from its planned rhythm.

Gillis continued, 'Bro, it's a non-starter. He said he doesn't f**king-,' before immediately realizing what he had said. He stopped, raised his hands, and exclaimed, 'Jeez!' as small gasps could be heard from members of the audience.

The comedian looked toward Dismukes while the crowd began laughing at the mistake. Dismukes placed an encouraging hand on Gillis's back, apparently signaling for him to keep the sketch moving.

After shaking his head and giving a breathy laugh, Gillis returned to the scripted scene. 'He said I don't like green eggs and ham,' he said, correcting the line without repeating the expletive.

A day later turned the unscripted mistake into another joke during the sketch. His character told Gillis, 'You're a loser, and you said a bad word!' and Gillis acknowledged the improvised jab by replying, 'Yes, I did.'

The expletive aired uncensored during the initial live broadcast. When Saturday Night Live later shared the sketch through its account on X, however, the word had been muted.

Gillis addressed the incident again at the end of the show, after giving a shout-out to musical guest Rosalia. He apologized for what had happened earlier, thanked the audience and said he had enjoyed himself.

He was not the first celebrity to let an F bomb slip during an appearance on the sketch comedy series. Paul Shaffer, Jenny Slate, Kristen Stewart, and Sam Rockwell were among other performers who had previously done the same.

The accidental curse followed a seven-minute opening monologue that drew gasps along with scattered laughter. Gillis made jokes about his appearance, exercise habits, women at the gym, a failed hiking experience, and using Joe Rogan's sauna.

At one point, Gillis told the audience, 'I'll tell you the thing that I'm really bothered by is I've balded directly into an Adolf Hitler haircut.' Some audience members reacted with surprise, while others laughed.

He continued the routine by discussing how the front of his hair falls down while he gives speeches. Gillis also pretended to brush his hair to the side as part of the joke before moving into another provocative punchline.

A later joke about women and their clothing at the gym again produced gasps and scattered laughs. Gillis followed it by describing neon workout shorts and joking that he was probably visible in the background of multiple TikTok videos.

The appearance marked another return to Saturday Night Live for Gillis, who previously hosted in 2024 and 2025. He had been selected as a cast member in 2019 before being fired after past videos surfaced showing him making racist and homophobic comments.

At the time, Saturday Night Live condemned what it called his 'offensive, hurtful and unacceptable' remarks and apologized for its 'vetting process.' Gillis said it 'feels ridiculous for comedians to be making serious public statements,' while also saying he 'respected the decision they made.'

Gillis discussed his firing when he hosted the show for the first time in 2024. Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels later told The Wall Street Journal that he had been forced to dismiss Gillis, saying the pressure came from those in charge.
