Matthew Ingalls, the former Cornell University Chi Phi fraternity brother tied to an alleged gang rape lawsuit, previously expressed embarrassment over his American citizenship while attending an elite private school in Dubai, The Post reported. Ingalls admitted initiating the threesome that an unnamed female student alleges became a gang rape.
Ingalls, 21, whose full name is Umar Matthew Ingalls, attended Dubai International Academy. The private school charges about $21,000 annually and is located in Dubai’s Emirates Hills neighborhood, which has been described as the city’s most exclusive and prestigious gated community.
Homes in that neighborhood start at $3 million. Cornell University’s rugby roster listed Dubai International Academy as Ingalls’ alma mater when he played on the team.
The former fraternity brother grew up between the Middle East and the United States. A resurfaced 2020 article reported that he was embarrassed by his American citizenship while attending the school and had to tell people in the United Arab Emirates that “no, I’m not a Trump supporter.”

“Generally speaking, ‘American’ over here is synonymous with ‘Trump,’ which is synonymous with a whole bunch of other words that I won’t mention,” the high school online magazine quoted Ingalls as saying. The article described him as half American.
At the time, he went by Umar Ingalls. That name also appeared in a 2022 article about a lunar rover project he built alongside four classmates at Dubai International Academy.
His father, Matthew Burtchaell Ingalls, is a professor of Islamic studies at the American University in Dubai. He has taught there since 2016 and chairs the Department of Middle Eastern Studies.
The elder Ingalls, 48, converted to Islam and criticized the direction of research on the religion in a 2021 article. He argued that studies in the Americas placed too much attention on terrorism.

“Much of the research in the Americas focused on questions of assimilation or terrorism and neglected the more basic issues of belief, practice and community,” he wrote in the research paper. He added, “Islam, in other words, was framed as a problem, not a way of life.”
Further confirmation: This article from a private elementary school he attended in Tacoma, Washington further confirms his identity. Annie Wright Schools identifies him as a LS (Lower School) graduate of 2016. This is also the same time when the man alleged to be his father, Matthew Ingalls, taught Islamic studies at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma Washington. Inkwell is the name of the student news website for Annie Wright Schools. They interviewed him about his dislike for President Donald Trump, and identified him as “half-American” while in Dubai attending another elite private school, “Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills.” (The timeline matches)

Matthew Burtchaell Ingalls earned a doctorate in Islamic studies from Yale University in 2011. He received a master’s degree in Arabic studies from the American University in Cairo in 2004, and Ingalls’ mother, Yasmine Khattab, is Egyptian.
The elder Ingalls taught Sharia law and Islamic Fundamentalism at Yale. His photograph and contact information were removed from his biography page on the American University in Dubai website this week amid the scandal.
Cornell University expelled Matthew Ingalls and another fraternity brother in 2024 after an internal investigation found them responsible for sexual assault. Ingalls reportedly fled to Dubai following the alleged gang rape lawsuit, which was filed last month.

According to the Daily Mail, Ingalls told friends he was taking a gap year in Thailand to “find himself” after his expulsion. Text messages newly released this week also revealed communications between Ingalls and Jane Doe following the party.
Four days after the party, Doe texted Ingalls in a panic that “everybody knows” and said she wanted to identify “the rats.” She wrote, “My reputation is destroyed, and I’m utterly ashamed. I’m f**king pissed because this many people shouldn’t know, and I feel like I know who some of the rats in the room were.”
Doe said rumors were spreading and becoming “crazier every f—king day.” She also threatened to beat up anyone who gave them “sh-t” about what happened while describing herself as “open-minded” about sexuality.
“Everyone needs to grow up cause sexuality and sex and sh*t is changing and stuff like this is going to become more common,” she texted. She added that she is “also really open-minded tho.”
Two weeks later, Doe asked Ingalls how the night began. Ingalls replied, “You come in, say hi. We start dancing for like maybe three to five minutes, and then I pop the question,” referring to the threesome.
Ingalls later wrote “boys come whip it out” twice in the Chi Phi Snapchat group conversation. He subsequently claimed he was the real victim and had been “sodomized” by Doe, while complaining that nobody at the Ivy League school cared he was a sexual assault “survivor.”
All seven Chi Phi fraternity brothers have denied raping Doe, and none has been charged with a crime. Ingalls could not be reached for comment, while questions sent by The Post to his father went unanswered.
