Former Democratic National Committee vice chair David Hogg delivered a blunt message to moderates during a recent CNN appearance. Get behind the party’s increasingly aggressive left wing, offer voters something different, or prepare to be pushed aside.

Hogg appeared with Kaitlan Collins on “The Source,” where he was pressed about growing concerns surrounding progressive candidates.

Moderate Democrats fear those nominees could excite liberal activists during primaries, only to struggle against Republicans once general election voters have their say.

“The reason why the establishment of our party is being defeated over and over and over again is because they don’t have the right values that are aligned with, not the Democratic base, but the American people. Where people are sick and tired of listening to Democrats and tell them all the reasons why they can’t solve their problems,” Hogg responded.

That is quite an indictment from a former party officer whose own tenure ended after only 130 days.

Hogg essentially argued that the Democratic establishment has failed because it keeps offering excuses instead of solutions, although his preferred solution appears to be a sharper turn toward the left.

He then aimed his criticism directly at the moderates who worry that progressive nominees could become political liabilities.

“I would say to the moderates in our party, ‘You need to figure out how to actually offer something new to voters that isn’t just the same message that you gave them in 2024.’”

Hogg also suggested that some Democratic lawmakers have not fought the Trump Administration aggressively enough.

He said his political organization is searching for candidates from his generation who can challenge incumbents, while insisting that effectiveness, rather than age alone, remains the central consideration.

Through Leaders We Deserve, Hogg has supported primary challenges against sitting Democratic members of Congress.

The organization sought to raise $20 million for more than a dozen campaigns targeting lawmakers whom Hogg viewed as complacent or insufficiently willing to advance the party’s leftist agenda.

The group raised roughly $15 million between 2023 and October of the previous year, giving Hogg a sizable political war chest.

That money helped turn his campaign against Democratic incumbents from a talking point into a direct threat against members who thought safe seats meant lifetime employment.

Hogg was elected as a DNC vice chair in February 2025 during the committee’s winter meeting.

His rise came after Democrats lost the White House and surrendered control of both chambers of Congress in the 2024 election, a drubbing that produced plenty of finger pointing but little agreement.

Soon after taking office, Hogg announced that Leaders We Deserve would support progressive challengers against selected Democratic incumbents in reliably Democratic districts.

He argued that Capitol Hill culture rewards seniority, protects complacency, and makes internal competition necessary if Democrats want meaningful change.

That plan quickly put Hogg at odds with DNC Chair Ken Martin.

Martin maintained that national party officers should not interfere in primary contests and told Hogg that he could continue targeting incumbents, but not while holding a leadership position inside the committee.

Martin later moved to broaden the DNC neutrality policy, which had previously focused primarily on presidential primaries.

The proposed expansion would cover additional primary contests and require party officers to sign a pledge promising not to put the committee’s thumb on the scale.

Hogg refused to abandon either his DNC post or his work with the political action committee.

A procedural complaint followed, and his brief tenure eventually collapsed, with Hogg announcing that he would not seek election again when the committee moved to choose new vice chairs.

In a related statement, Hogg acknowledged a fundamental disagreement over what a vice chair should be permitted to do.

He also argued that comfortable people holding power rarely embrace change, which was a colorful way of telling longtime Democrats that the new left intends to replace them.

The episode exposed a familiar Democratic problem.

Party leaders want activist energy and donor money, but they become considerably less enthusiastic when those activists begin hunting incumbents and demanding ideological obedience from anyone unwilling to march left.

Hogg may no longer hold a DNC title, but he remains active through Leaders We Deserve and continues pressing his campaign against established Democrats.

For moderates hoping the party might rediscover political restraint after 2024, his CNN remarks offered a different answer: move left, fight harder, or clear the path.
