Former MSNBC host Joy Reid is facing backlash after casting doubt on the July 2024 assassination attempt on President Donald Trump during a recent podcast interview.

Speaking with Katie Phang on the MeidasTouch podcast, Reid repeated a fringe claim that the attempt on President Trump’s life in Butler, Pennsylvania, was fabricated.

Trump was shot in the ear during the attack, and Corey Comperatore, a former fire chief, was killed shielding his family from gunfire. Several others were wounded in the incident.

Reid questioned the official account of the shooting and mocked the circumstances surrounding the president’s injury.

"He’s got these magical doctors who claimed that he was shot in the ear, but his ear, I guess, grew back," Reid said.

"He had a Duplo bandage on one minute, no bandage the next. We can’t get a medical record from this alleged assassination. He was supposed to be shot. We have nothing. We’ve got nothing. You can’t even ask."

Phang supported Reid’s skepticism, adding, "Where are the investigative records? One day, he slapped his maxi pad on his ear, the next day, the ear is totally fine."

Reid continued, drawing comparisons to past presidential assassinations.

"We knew almost immediately, almost everything about [President John F.] Kennedy’s assassination. I know more about [President William] McKinley’s assassination that I do about this attempt to assassinate Trump when he was a presidential candidate," she said. "We’re getting nothing. The mainstream media isn’t demanding his medical records."

The remarks have prompted criticism given the confirmed details of the Butler shooting.

Law enforcement reported that the gunman opened fire at the rally, killing Comperatore and injuring two others in addition to wounding Trump.

Witnesses, video footage, and emergency responses from that day confirmed the attack.

Reid, who was dismissed from MSNBC in 2024, has continued to appear on left-leaning platforms since her departure.

Her latest comments have drawn attention both for the dismissal of confirmed evidence and for the suggestion that the attempt on the president’s life was staged.

The Butler shooting remains under investigation, with questions still surrounding the background and motives of the assailant.

However, federal authorities and the Secret Service have confirmed the details of the incident, and President Trump himself has spoken publicly about the attempt on his life.

Reid’s statements have fueled renewed debate over the role of media figures in spreading unsupported theories, particularly regarding high-profile acts of political violence.

While she criticized the lack of public details about the shooter, her dismissal of the attempt itself has been met with strong pushback from critics who point to the loss of life and the documented injury to the president.

Corey Comperatore’s death has been widely recognized as an act of bravery, as he shielded his family from gunfire during the attack.

Reid’s comments have been criticized as minimizing the sacrifice he made and the reality of the violence that took place.

Despite Reid’s claims, federal and local investigators continue to review the case, and official records affirm that the July 2024 shooting in Butler was a genuine attempt on President Trump’s life.
