California Gov. Gavin Newsom was asked during a recent PBS interview whether he would continue his podcast if he became president, prompting him to consider what a presidential version of the program might look like, as reported by The Gateway Pundit.

The exchange came as Newsom faces increased attention over his political future and speculation about whether he will seek the Democratic nomination for president in 2028.

Newsom has not formally announced a presidential campaign, but his recent political activity has fueled discussion about a possible White House bid.

During the interview with PBS NewsHour host Amna Nawaz, the conversation turned to Newsom's podcast and whether he would maintain the format if he eventually entered the White House.

Newsom initially appeared to consider the possibility before responding that a presidential podcast would represent something different from the traditional presidential radio address.

“As president, a presidential podcast, that’s kind of a little different, a little different than a fireside chat. It’s kind of a modern version,” Newsom said.

Nawaz then asked whether such a podcast would be a good idea.

Newsom responded by turning his attention toward the presentation of the program, including what he would wear.

“I’m sitting back. I’m thinking. I’m thinking about what I would what I wear. Is it a sweater? Is it more a relaxing, approachable look?” Newsom said.

Nawaz replied, “Depends on the season, I think.”

Newsom continued, “I don’t know. I just -- I feel my physiology changed when you said that.”

He ultimately said he believed the format could be useful for a president.

“I think it’s a fantastic one,” Newsom said. “I think you have to meet people where they are, and the reason I’m doing a podcast is I’m trying to iterate.”

Newsom has used his podcast and other media appearances as part of a broader effort to communicate directly with voters. During the PBS interview, he said Democrats needed to experiment with different approaches after suffering political setbacks.

“And after we got shellacked last year, I just felt like we needed to do different things,” Newsom said.

The governor also referenced changes he has made to his social media presence and other efforts designed to reach audiences outside traditional political channels.

The discussion comes as Newsom has increasingly positioned himself in national Democratic politics. PBS reported that he has been traveling in North and South Carolina while raising money and working to help Democrats win state-level elections.

The activity has coincided with speculation about his own potential presidential campaign.

Recent reporting has also focused on Newsom's appearances in South Carolina, which is scheduled to host the Democrats' first presidential primary in 2028.

The Associated Press reported that “Gavin 2028” buttons were being sold outside some of his events and that people close to Newsom have discussed a potential White House campaign.

The AP also reported that Newsom's connection to California could become an issue in a national campaign, particularly because California's political identity is viewed differently across various parts of the country.

For now, Newsom remains California's governor and has not formally entered the 2028 presidential race.

But his comments about maintaining a podcast from the White House add another glimpse into how he is thinking about modern presidential communication while his national political profile continues to grow.

The possibility of a presidential podcast would represent a significant expansion of the direct-to-voter format that Newsom has already embraced as governor.
