Sen. Ted Cruz accused Democrats of deliberately avoiding scrutiny over what he described as a massive fraud scheme involving Minnesota taxpayers, arguing that political interests have taken precedence over accountability and national security concerns.

U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz jokes with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman during a Q&A Tuesday at the Stargate data center under construction in north Abilene Sept. 23, 2025. The $500 billion initiative was announced in January by President Donald Trump with Abilene as its epicenter.

Cruz made the remarks while criticizing what he said was a conspicuous absence of attention to a multibillion-dollar fraud allegedly carried out by Somali fraudsters in Minnesota.

He claimed Democratic officials were fully aware of the activity and benefited from it politically.

“In that enormous word cloud, virtually nothing about $9 billion stolen from Minnesota taxpayers by Somali fraudsters, with Democrat politicians knowing full well what is happening, facilitating it and harvesting votes and campaign dollars from the people robbing the children of Minnesota,” Cruz said.

According to Cruz, Democrats have attempted to divert attention away from the alleged fraud by reframing the discussion around unrelated moral or religious themes.

“My Democrat colleagues want you desperately not to focus on those facts, and so instead, miraculously, the Democrats have discovered the Sermon on the Mount,” he said.

Cruz said upcoming hearings would center on the alleged theft itself and what he characterized as its broader implications, including connections to terrorism.

“Well, this hearing is going to focus on $9 billion stolen from the taxpayers, and hundreds of millions of those dollars going to the Al Shabaab terrorist organization funded by the Democrats,” Cruz said.

Cruz’s comments reflect growing Republican scrutiny of fraud tied to federal and state programs in Minnesota, as well as concerns about how misused funds may intersect with foreign terrorist organizations.

He framed the issue as both a failure of governance and a national security threat, asserting that the alleged scheme has gone unaddressed due to political incentives.

The remarks add to ongoing partisan clashes over fraud enforcement, campaign financing, and oversight of taxpayer-funded programs, particularly in states with large federal aid flows.

Cruz said the focus of the hearing would remain on the alleged theft and accountability for those he claims enabled it.
