Lauren Bis, Deputy Assistant Secretary at the Department of Homeland Security, released a statement disputing media coverage and statements from sanctuary politicians following recent attacks on federal law enforcement officers in Minneapolis and Portland, saying false narratives have misrepresented what occurred during those incidents.

“I’m Lauren Bis, Deputy Assistant Secretary at the Department of Homeland Security. I’m here to set the record straight on false reporting surrounding our brave law enforcement,” Bis said.

Bis addressed an incident in Minneapolis involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers, saying inaccurate claims were circulated after the event.

“Following the attack in Minneapolis, the media and Sanctuary politicians began spreading smears about our law enforcement, from claiming the rider was driving away from law enforcement to garbage that she was denied medical care,” Bis said.

Bis said ICE officers were conducting enforcement actions when they were confronted by rioters.

“Here’s what really happened. ICE officers in Minneapolis were conducting targeted operations when rioters began blocking ICE officers, and one of these violent rioters weaponized her vehicle, attempting to run over our law enforcement officers and an attempt to kill them,” Bis said.

She said an officer responded in self-defense.

“An ICE officer, fearing for his life, the lives of his fellow law enforcement and the safety of the public, fired defensive shots. He used his training and saved his own life and that of his fellow officers,” Bis said.

Bis said video evidence supports the department’s account.

“This footage corroborates what DHS has stated all along, that this individual was impeding law enforcement and weaponized her vehicle in an attempt to kill or cause bodily harm to federal law enforcement,” she said.

Bis said the public can review the footage themselves.

“The American people can watch this video with their own eyes and ears and judge for themselves,” she said.

She also addressed claims related to medical care following the incident.

“Immediately, our ICE officers got medics and there was an ambulance on the scene. The individual was pronounced dead,” Bis said.

Bis acknowledged the loss of life.

“Any loss of life is an absolute tragedy. We do pray for the deceased and her family and as well as for our officer and all those affected in the situation,” she said.

Bis then referenced a separate incident involving law enforcement in Portland.

“On Thursday, there was another vehicle attack on law enforcement officers in Portland as they were attempting to arrest an affiliate and suspected member of Tren de Aragua,” Bis said.

She said the individual had prior criminal involvement.

“One of these illegal aliens played an active role in a Tren de Aragua prostitution ring and was involved in a prior shooting in Portland,” Bis said.

Bis criticized media portrayals of the suspects.

“How does CNN choose to portray these suspected gang members an innocent married couple shot by Border Patrol? Give me a break,” she said.

Bis said the suspects had been released into the country and later attacked officers.

“These two suspected Tren de Aragua gang associates were let loose on American streets by Joe Biden and weaponized their vehicle against border patrol in Portland, the agent took immediate action to defend himself and others,” she said.

Bis said the incidents reflect broader hostility toward law enforcement.

“These attacks are the direct consequence of constant attacks and demonization of our officers by sanctuary politicians who fuel and encourage rampant assaults on our law enforcement,” she said.

She cited increases in violence and threats against officers.

“These men and women who are simply enforcing the law on the books, are facing a 1,300% increase in assaults against them, a 3,200% increase in vehicle attacks and an 8,000% increase in death threats,” Bis said.

Bis concluded by referencing a recent observance honoring law enforcement.

“This week, we celebrated law enforcement appreciation day. If you see a law enforcement officer, don’t forget to thank them for their service,” she said.
