Acting U.S. Attorney Joseph Thompson provided a detailed briefing Monday on the fatal shootings of Minnesota State Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark Hortman, calling the events “truly chilling” and pointing to evidence that the attacks were premeditated and politically targeted.

Vance Luther Boelter has been charged with six counts in connection to the fatal shootings of the Hortmans and the attempted murders of State Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette.

Thompson said Boelter deliberately targeted the victims, stalking them “like prey” and disguising himself as law enforcement to carry out the attacks.

“The details of Boelter’s crime are even worse. They are truly chilling,” Thompson said.

“It is no exaggeration to say that his crimes are the stuff of nightmares. Boelter stalked his victims like prey, he went to their homes, held himself out as a police officer and shot them in cold blood.”

According to investigators, Boelter first traveled to Sen. Hoffman’s home in the early hours of Saturday morning.

He arrived in a black SUV equipped with police-style emergency lights and a license plate marked “Police.”

Surveillance footage from the residence showed Boelter wearing body armor, a black tactical vest, and a hyper-realistic silicone mask. He was also carrying a police-style flashlight.

When he knocked on the door, Boelter reportedly told the Hoffmans that there had been a shooting reported at their home.

When challenged by Sen. Hoffman, who questioned his identity, Boelter forced his way forward.

During the altercation, he shot the senator and then his wife multiple times, according to Thompson.

Boelter then traveled to two other locations tied to elected officials.

One official, who was not publicly named, was out of town at the time.

At the other location in New Hope, Minnesota, Boelter was encountered by a female police officer who had been dispatched to conduct a wellness check.

He fled the scene before additional officers arrived.

At approximately 3:30 a.m., Boelter arrived at the home of Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband.

Two officers were present at the time, conducting a wellness check due to the earlier attack on the Hoffmans. Boelter reportedly opened fire on the officers before forcing his way into the home and fatally shooting the couple.

He escaped on foot after the confrontation, leaving behind a 9 mm Beretta pistol, the body armor, and his mask, which were recovered at the scene.

Law enforcement officials later searched Boelter’s vehicle and found five additional firearms, a large supply of ammunition, and handwritten notes listing over 45 state and federal elected officials.

The list included the names of the Hortmans, authorities confirmed.

“Boelter planned his attack carefully,” Thompson said.

“He researched his victims and their families, he used the internet and other tools to find their addresses and their names, he conducted surveillance of their homes and took notes about the location of their homes.”

“He concealed himself as a police officer, outfitting his black SUV with police lights and a police license plate, wearing a black tactical vest and body armor and carrying a police flashlight and a handgun. And of course, he wore that hyper-realistic silicone mask as seen on the surveillance videos,” Thompson added.

In addition to the weapons and surveillance materials, authorities found a stack of “No Kings” protest fliers inside Boelter’s vehicle.

The slogan has been used in recent protests against President Donald Trump, raising concerns about a potential political motive.

Officials stated that due to the nature of the incident, they are advising the public to avoid attending upcoming “No Kings” protests out of concern for public safety.

The Department of Justice has not yet announced whether further federal charges will be filed. Boelter remains in custody, and authorities continue to investigate the full scope of the alleged plot and whether other individuals may have been targeted.
