Authorities in Georgia have launched an intensive search for a missing father of five who disappeared this week while kayaking on Lake Lanier, a reservoir with a longstanding reputation for unexplained drownings and fatal accidents, as reported by The New York Post.

Dustin Valencia, 43, was reported missing by his wife on Wednesday after he failed to pick up their children from school. His vehicle was later discovered parked at Little Ridge Park on the shores of Lake Lanier, according to a report from 11 Alive News.

Investigators believe Valencia had gone out on the lake in an inflatable kayak, but as of Friday morning, both he and the raft remain missing.

The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office confirmed a search operation was launched Thursday involving multiple units conducting both land and water sweeps. Drones and marine search equipment have been deployed to aid the effort.

Lake Lanier, located northeast of Atlanta, was constructed in the 1950s and covers land that once included small towns, forested areas, and even cemeteries.

Its troubled history has long fueled speculation among locals that the lake is haunted. Since 1994, more than 200 people have died in its waters, contributing to its reputation as one of the most dangerous lakes in the United States.

The lake has even been featured in paranormal discussions and shows like Netflix’s Ozark.

The search for Valencia continues to expand, and authorities are asking the public for help. Anyone who spots a stray inflatable kayak is being urged to contact the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office immediately.

“He’s got five kids. I can’t imagine what his family is going through,” one community member said. “I think they would want everyone to know and go look for him and spread the word.”

As of Friday, no foul play has been confirmed, and authorities continue to treat the disappearance as a missing person case.

The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office has not yet issued updates on whether the search has turned up any personal belongings or additional clues beyond Valencia’s car.

Officials continue to coordinate with marine rescue teams and are expected to maintain search operations through the weekend.
