Whoopi Goldberg recently opened up about her financial situation, revealing that she’s “having a hard time,” like many Americans, and can’t afford to quit her gig on The View.

During Tuesday’s episode, the 69-year-old actress emphasized that despite her fame, she’s a “working person” who needs her paycheck. Her comments, however, have sparked reactions, with many questioning if her perspective truly aligns with the financial realities faced by average Americans, as reported by Buzzfeed.

On the episode, the panel dove into a conversation about last week’s election, with co-host Sara Haines discussing the motivations behind working-class support for Donald Trump.

“There were millions and millions of people who felt heard [by Trump],” Haines said, expressing a desire to understand their perspective. As the discussion grew heated, Whoopi jumped in, sharing her personal experience of economic struggle, despite her career success.

“I appreciate that people are having a hard time, me, too—I work for a living!” she said. “If I had all the money in the world, I would not be here, OK? So, I’m a working person, you know?”

Whoopi’s comments come amid broader conversations around inflation and economic hardship, with many Americans feeling the financial squeeze. She shared, “My kid has to feed her family. My great-granddaughter has to be fed by her family. I know it’s hard out there.”

She then turned back to the panel, mentioning, “We talk to people all the time who say: ‘This is what’s bothering me.’ But the thing that’s bothering everybody should not be the thing that puts 85% of other people in danger.”

The actress’s statements have raised eyebrows, particularly considering her reported net worth of around $30 million and past high-profile roles, like her career-defining paycheck for Sister Act 2, which once made her Hollywood’s highest-paid actress.

Back in 2016, Variety reported Whoopi’s contract for The View was estimated to be in the $5 to $6 million range. Despite these reported earnings, she claims to feel the same economic pressures many Americans face.

Former View co-host Meghan McCain has also weighed in on the disconnect she felt during her time on the show.

On her podcast Citizen McCain, Meghan recalled a tense “Hot Topics” meeting, saying, “Some of you, or all of you, are going to have to start interacting with people who don’t make $100,000 a year or more. You have to interact with someone who makes minimum wage, on some level or another.”

For many, Goldberg’s financial “struggles” echo a sentiment often voiced by Hollywood elites but seldom understood by average Americans facing real economic pressures. As Goldberg continues on The View and with new projects, including Sister Act 3, her words will likely remain a subject of public scrutiny.
