Several Ohio Republican congressmen are calling on the Biden administration to provide emergency funding to Springfield, Ohio, as the small town struggles with a massive influx of Haitian migrants.

In letters sent to the Departments of Justice, Health and Human Services, and Education, the lawmakers urged the federal government to step in, citing the administration’s policies as a direct cause of the crisis.

The six Ohio GOP lawmakers — Reps. Mike Turner, Michael Rulli, Mike Carey, Brad Wenstrup, Robert Latta, and Warren Davidson — stressed that the Biden-Harris administration’s immigration policies, specifically the Haitian Parole Program and Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian nationals, are fueling the overwhelming migration to Springfield. According to the congressmen, “Programs like TPS allow Haitian nationals to remain in the country indefinitely.”

“It is the Biden-Harris Administration’s responsibility to provide assistance to the City of Springfield, its schools, healthcare centers, law enforcement, and social services agencies as they navigate this immigration crisis,” the GOP lawmakers wrote.

The influx of migrants has brought national media attention to Springfield, a town of fewer than 60,000 residents, which has seen an estimated 15,000 to 20,000 Haitian migrants arrive in recent years.

The strain on the city’s infrastructure has been immense, with transportation, education, and social services particularly hard-hit. As reported by The Daily Caller News Foundation (DCNF), locals expressed frustration with the federal government’s inaction, highlighting the burden the town now faces.

Rhonda Adams, a Springfield resident and lifelong local, voiced her concerns to the DCNF: “Too many people are being brought into our small city that was struggling to begin with. We don’t have the resources to accommodate [all of the arriving Haitian migrants]. We have so many homeless people here.”

Adams, like many others in Springfield, feels the town’s challenges have been ignored by local officials and Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine. “That’s what we need because our mayor, our city commissioners, and [Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine] have acted like it’s not a big deal,”  she said, adding, “I like it because we need to be heard. We are not getting help from our city government or our governor.”

The migration crisis made headlines when a local social media page alleged that a Haitian migrant had butchered a pet cat for food. While this claim has not been verified, it was enough to spark further media coverage, and even former President Donald Trump mentioned it during a debate with Vice President Kamala Harris.

The Ohio Republican congressmen made it clear that they believe the federal government is responsible for resolving the situation. “The federal government created this crisis, and Springfield is entitled to a federal remedy,” they wrote. “Action is required by your agency, and our offices stand ready to work with you on this critical matter.”

As of now, the White House has not responded to requests for comment regarding the situation in Springfield.
