Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison has stirred up a storm by applauding Brazil’s recent crackdown on Elon Musk’s social media platform, X. In a Labor Day post on X, Ellison, who serves under Governor Tim Walz, expressed his support for the Brazilian Supreme Court’s decision to ban X from the country.

His message, “Obrigado Brasil!”—“Thanks, Brazil!”—was met with immediate backlash, highlighting the deep divide over issues of free speech and government control, as reported by Breitbart.

Prominent conservative voices quickly responded to Ellison’s celebration of censorship.

Mollie Hemingway, editor-in-chief of The Federalist, didn’t mince words, stating, “Tim Walz’s attorney general in Minnesota—Keith Ellison—thanks Brazil for crushing free speech platform X.”

This reaction echoes the growing concern among conservatives that left-wing officials are increasingly comfortable with suppressing dissenting voices.

Musk also chimed in:

The controversy stems from Brazil’s Supreme Court, led by Justice Alexandre de Moraes, ordering a nationwide block on X. The decision came after Musk refused to comply with the court’s demands to remove certain accounts from his platform.

In a bold move, Musk closed X’s office in Brazil, prompting the court to freeze the assets of his satellite internet company, Starlink, as reported by Fox News.

De Moraes didn’t stop there—he threatened fines of nearly $9,000 per day for anyone attempting to access X, further escalating tensions between Musk and Brazilian authorities.

Musk, known for his outspoken defense of free speech, slammed the decision, framing it as a dangerous overreach of government power.

But the story doesn’t end there. Musk also found himself in the crosshairs of The New York Times after the outlet published an article suggesting that the U.S. Constitution might be one of the “biggest threats” to the nation.

The piece, written by Jennifer Szalai, argued that the Constitution’s structure, particularly the Electoral College, enabled Donald Trump’s rise to power, thereby fostering cynicism and authoritarianism.

Szalai’s critique of “Constitution worship” drew sharp criticism from Musk, who fired back on X, accusing the left of wanting to “overthrow the Constitution.”

Musk’s defense of America’s founding document was quickly echoed by Fox News host Laura Ingraham, who bluntly stated, “Does the NYT hate the Constitution? Of course it does.”

Amid this firestorm, Kamala Harris added fuel to the fire with her comments about Musk. Harris stated, “He [Musk] has lost his privileges.” This prompted a fiery response from RFK Jr., who took to X to remind her, “Can someone please explain to her that freedom of speech is a RIGHT, not a ‘privilege’?” Harris further commented, “There has to be a responsibility placed on these social media sites to understand their power,” which RFK Jr. translated as, “If they don’t police content to conform to government-approved narratives, they will be shut down.”

As these debates rage on, it’s clear that the battle over free speech and the interpretation of the Constitution is far from over. With figures like Ellison and Harris cheering on censorship and media outlets questioning the very foundation of American democracy, conservatives have every reason to stay vigilant.
