Sophia Bush has confirmed that her “One Tree Hill” castmate Hilarie Burton warned her not to date their fellow cast member Chad Michael Murray. Bush and Murray later married briefly, separating only five months after their April 2005 wedding, as reported by Page Six.

The actress, now 44, discussed Burton’s warning during Wednesday’s episode of Alex Cooper’s “Call Her Daddy” podcast. Bush explained that Burton and Murray had previously “worked together on another show” and that it “wasn’t a great experience” for Burton.

Cooper described Burton as “one of” Bush’s “closest friends on set.” According to Bush, Burton “explicitly” told her, “do not date [Murray].”

Looking back, Bush acknowledged that her friend had tried to steer her away from a painful situation. “You know, it was good advice,” she admitted, adding that she “just didn’t have the wherewithal or the experience” to follow it.

Bush and Murray were both 23 when they married in April 2005. Their ceremony took place by the ocean in Santa Monica, California, but the marriage unraveled quickly, with the couple separating five months later.

Their divorce was finalized in December 2006. At the time, speculation about cheating surrounded the split, and Bush addresses that period in her upcoming memoir, “And I Will Tell You Mine: Notes from a Life in Progress.”

During the podcast conversation, Bush poked fun at her younger self and the trust she placed in others. “My friends used to joke, like ‘look up gullible in the dictionary and you’ll see [Bush’s] face.'”

Cooper also asked whether Bush’s relationship with Murray caused distance between her and Burton. Bush said she spent years believing her decision had damaged one of her closest friendships from the set.

“For years, I thought that’s why we stopped being two peas in a pod,” Bush recalled. She also said she “felt so much shame” over what had happened.

Bush conceded that Burton’s assessment had proved accurate at the time. “She was right,” Bush said, adding, “about who he was then.”

The actress anticipated that her remarks could draw a strong reaction online, joking that the “trolls” would “have a field day.” Still, she insisted that it is “all good” now.

Bush said the “distance” between the friends likely developed because “I didn’t listen. She was right.” Her comments framed Burton’s warning as something she could appreciate more clearly with experience and time.

The conversation also turned to women Murray allegedly cheated on Bush with during their relationship. Bush revealed that she later developed friendships with some of those women and writes about those connections in her memoir.

“I wrote about some of the friendships I made with women who I think the world would probably think I would never speak to, that I really cherish,” she said. Bush emphasized that she values those relationships rather than viewing the women only through the history surrounding her marriage.

“And frankly, when I look at the landscape, I’m like badass, badass, badass, badass,” Bush continued. “You did have great taste, bro, and like, congrats, you crushed. I’m like, ‘I get it.’ I’m just like, ‘Damn.’ Like, in a lineup, I’d take any one of us.”

Bush explained that those friendships became possible because everyone involved had changed since that period. She said they are “completely different people from who we were [then].”

Representatives for Murray and Burton did not immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment on Wednesday evening. Bush had previously said during a 2021 podcast interview that she held no “ill will” toward Murray and would not “talk about him.”

At that time, Bush said attempts to joke about being young were often distorted into criticism of someone she no longer knew. Murray married Sarah Roemer in 2015, and they share three children, while Bush married soccer star Ashlyn Harris after divorcing Grant Hughes in 2023.
