Michigan Democrat Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed is taking a fierce online roasting after a Black voter outreach video featured a restaurant order that critics viewed as painfully stereotypical. His attempt to connect with Black voters instead became fresh material for ridicule.
El-Sayed has struggled to win support from Black voters who are alarmed by the radical direction associated with the DSA wing of the Democrat Party. The party is even calling on Barack Obama in an effort to help his campaign.
Against that backdrop, El-Sayed appeared in a video sitting at a restaurant with a Black woman. The scene was presented as an effort to reassure Black voters and overcome concerns about discrimination from Arabs toward Black people.
El-Sayed also tried to distance himself from Arabs who catcall women, according to the account of the video. Yet the conversation soon gave way to a restaurant exchange that drew far more attention than whatever political message his campaign hoped to deliver.

A waiter approached the table and asked what the pair wanted to eat. The woman ordered the blackened catfish, setting up what could have been a completely ordinary moment in an otherwise calculated political outreach video.
El-Sayed then placed his own order. Rather than choosing the same dish or ordering something less likely to invite mockery, the Michigan candidate asked for fried chicken.
HAHAHAHAHAHA it was fried chicken https://t.co/J6Wmn6lJlJ

That decision immediately became the defining moment of the video. Critics interpreted the order as a clumsy attempt to display affection for Black voters through one of the most obvious racial stereotypes imaginable.
The problem was not merely that El-Sayed ordered fried chicken. It was the surrounding context of a video explicitly aimed at Black voter outreach, with the candidate seated across from a Black woman while trying to establish his credentials as an ally.

The combination made the restaurant choice look less like lunch and more like a political prop. For a candidate already struggling with this voting bloc, the scene offered an extraordinary example of pandering that was anything but subtle.
The viral video and the responses directed at El-Sayed were brutal. Instead of winning praise for connecting with Black voters, he became the target of Americans who saw the clip as embarrassing, desperate, and loaded with stereotypes.
@theblaze He then ordered malt liquor and a pack of menthols for dessert

One X user had apparently predicted that El-Sayed would eventually do exactly this. That prediction added another layer of humiliation because the candidate’s move was apparently so predictable that a critic had already imagined it before the video appeared.
Fake-ass Dr @AbdulElSayed , probably: "And for my next act, let's enjoy some delicious halal watermelon and fried chicken."

The episode also highlighted the campaign’s larger challenge with Black voters. Those voters are concerned about the radical vision being advanced inside the Democrat Party by its DSA wing.

El-Sayed’s answer was a carefully staged outreach video meant to address those concerns. But the fried chicken order swallowed the intended message and ensured that viewers focused on the stereotype rather than the candidate’s assurances.
@JayTC53 STOP! Is this a Saturday Night Live skit? OMG

El-Sayed, a so-called doctor who believed he had found the right prescription for his flailing campaign. That supposed remedy amounted to blatant racial pandering, and the online reaction suggested the treatment was worse than the political ailment.
Bringing Barack Obama into the effort demonstrates how serious the Democrat Party considers El-Sayed’s difficulty with Black voters. Yet even presidential star power cannot erase a campaign clip once it becomes a viral punchline.
El-Sayed wanted the restaurant scene to persuade Black voters that he understood and respected them. Instead, his fried chicken order left critics asking whether his campaign understands those voters at all, or whether it simply reached for the laziest stereotype on the menu.
