The armed father whom police said “neutralized” a teenage shooter at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, has been identified as Kaylub Giamanco, age 36. A law enforcement source confirmed his identity to Fox News Digital.

The shooter, who was 16, killed three children and one teacher during Thursday’s attack. Police identified the slain teacher Friday as Meghan Lambert, age 25, and said the youngest victim was Rhoam Summer, age 5.

“Meghan was compassionate and had a huge heart. She always fought for the underdog and those with special needs. She was an incredible sister, daughter, niece and granddaughter. Her friends became her family,” Lambert’s family said in a statement read during Friday’s news conference.

Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz called Thursday a terrible day for the community. Five people died at the scene, a total that included the shooter, three children ages 5, 8 and 11, and Lambert.

A child age 7 and a teacher age 54 were transported by Bend Fire to Saint Charles Bend with critical injuries. Police said the child was later in serious but stable condition, while the teacher suffered injuries that were not life-threatening.

Krantz said a witness driving near the school at 12:58 p.m. saw the shooter throw a gun over a fence and climb onto school property. When the witness confronted him, the shooter fired at the witness’s truck and struck it at least three times.

The witness was not hit by the gunfire. He drove down the street and placed the first 911 call at 12:59 p.m., according to Krantz.

Giamanco drove into the school parking lot after seeing the shooter fire at the truck, Krantz said. He then saw the teenager shoot the glass panes of two double doors to gain entry to the building.

Once inside, the shooter went directly into a classroom located to the left and fired as many as 15 rounds. Krantz said the shooter used three types of ammunition and that every victim was shot inside that classroom.

Giamanco retrieved a legally kept .40 caliber pistol from his vehicle and entered the school through the same damaged doors. After following the sounds of gunfire, he reached the classroom and saw the shooter struggling with a teacher who had tackled him.

Krantz praised both Giamanco and the teacher who confronted the attacker. The teacher threw her cellphone at the shooter, tackled him, and fought to take his firearm.

“She was not injured in that incident, but she almost certainly helped prevent more bloodshed,” Krantz said.

Police reached the school at 1:02 p.m., within minutes of the initial 911 call. Officers had been told that the “suspect had been shot by a community member who had seen the suspect enter the school and pursued him into the school and engaged him, shooting him several times,” Krantz said.

Earlier Friday, Giamanco’s mother, Kenda Freeman, said in a statement that her son intervened during the attack and shot the gunman who killed the three students and Lambert, according to The Associated Press.

Giamanco is a local carpenter and father whose two daughters attend Silver Rail, his brother, Kyle Gianmaco, told NBC News. Kyle said Giamanco was shaken by what happened and did not want to address the public.

“We want the bystander who intervened to know we know he is going through a rough time, but we are grateful, and we think he is a hero,” Lambert’s family said.

The family also told Giamanco, “You selflessly put yourself at risk for others. We would like the other families to know they are in our thoughts and prayers. Meghan loved those children, and so we will show you love for her.”

Krantz said Thursday that the shooter forced his way through the locked doors by firing a shotgun. Investigators said he fired as many as 15 times and still had about 44 rounds when he was killed.

Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek praised school staff, parents, first responders and the community member “who heroically intervened to stop further loss of life.”

Silver Rail Elementary School is part of the Bend-La Pine Schools District. The public school serves roughly 400 students from kindergarten through fifth grade and has approximately 40 staff members.
