Michigan Democrat Melanie Rutherford says she will cross party lines this fall and vote Republican for the first time. Her choice in the Michigan Senate race is Mike Rogers, whom she believes can represent the full state rather than only a select group.
Rutherford is not approaching politics as a newcomer. She served as a member of the Pontiac city council, knows politics well, and has always been a Democrat, making her decision to support Rogers a conspicuous break from her established partisan identity.
In remarks presented on national television, Rutherford explained that she researched Rogers before reaching her decision. Her account focused on policy alignment and on what she sees as Rogers’s broader approach to representing Michigan residents.
Rutherford said, “I started doing my research on Mike Rogers.”

She added, “I’m a staunch Democrat…my policies align with Rogers.”
Rutherford continued, “He’s about the conglomerate of people, not just a select few.”
Her support was framed not as enthusiasm for a Republican label, but as a judgment about which candidate better reflects her policies. That makes for an awkward testimonial for Democrats: one of their own did the research and landed on Rogers.
Rutherford also delivered an unmistakable rejection of the alternative, saying, “I couldn’t in my right mind vote for this guy…his ideas don’t align with what I think is best.”

Rutherford also acknowledged that publicly abandoning her usual Democratic voting pattern could bring social consequences. She said, “You can be ostracized…everybody knows me as a staunch Democrat.”
WOW! Black Democrat woman just went on national TV saying SHE'S VOTING MIKE ROGERS in Michigan
First time in her life voting Republican NOT voting Abdul El Sayed. "I started doing my research on Mike Rogers. I'm a staunch Democrat...my policies align with Rogers. He's about the conglomerate of people, not just a select few." "I couldn't in my right mind vote for this guy...his ideas don't align with what I think is best." "You can be ostracized...everybody knows me as a staunch Democrat." — Melanie Rutherford This is exactly El Sayed's weak spot. A July poll had him at just 21% with Black voters in the primary, compared with 67% for Haley Stevens He lost Wayne County, home to Detroit Rogers has been working and it's paying off! Hearing her say she could be "ostracized" just for voting her conscience tells you everything about today's Democrat Party Michigan, this is how El Sayed LOSES — Eric Daugherty (@EricLDaugh) October 16, 2026
That admission makes clear that her political identity is already familiar to people around her. Even with the possibility of being ostracized, Rutherford is publicly declaring that she will vote for Rogers this fall.
Her explanation repeatedly returned to representation and policy rather than party habit. She believes Rogers is focused on a broad collection of people instead of a select few, and she says her own policies align with his.
The black community is not embracing the radical new vision of the Democrat Party introduced by the DSA wing. Rutherford’s declaration is presented as a direct example of resistance to that political direction.
The political point is unapologetic. A black Democrat with experience on the Pontiac city council is not merely criticizing her party’s candidate, but preparing to cast her first Republican vote for Mike Rogers.
Rather than treating Democratic loyalty as automatic, Rutherford says she conducted research and reached a different conclusion. Her decision, as she describes it, rests on which candidate’s policies and approach to representation most closely match her own views.
Imagine whether hundreds of thousands of other voters like Rutherford might exist in Michigan and elsewhere. That possibility is presented as a hypothetical, not as a documented count of voters making the same decision.
It further contends that Democrats would face serious political trouble if the black vote ever moved to a Republican majority.
What is concrete is Rutherford’s own declaration. She is a Democrat, she served on the Pontiac city council, and she says she will vote Republican for the first time because Mike Rogers better aligns with her policies and her view of what Michigan needs.
