Mark Ruffalo, the left-wing Marvel star known for The Avengers series, has launched another attack on California Democrat Governor Gavin Newsom. This time, the actor is furious over Newsom’s effort to block a statewide tax targeting billionaires, as reported by Breitbart.
Ruffalo unloaded on Newsom in a post on X, accusing the governor of repeatedly favoring billionaires over working-class Californians. His latest criticism centered on Newsom’s support for Prop 42.
The proposal is intended to stop any new state wealth tax on California’s billionaires. Newsom has vocally backed the measure, arguing that wealth taxes could threaten people’s retirement savings.
Newsom presented his support for Prop 42 as an effort to protect firefighters, veterans, seniors, union members, small businesses, and other Californians. His statement focused on preventing new state taxes from affecting retirement and life savings.

“I am proud to stand with firefighters, blue-collar unions, veterans, seniors, and small businesses in support of Prop 42. We all agree that Californians deserve to have their retirement and life savings protected from new state taxes so those savings are there when they need them,” the governor said in a statement.
Ruffalo rejected that explanation and struck back at Newsom for opposing new wealth taxes. The actor claimed the governor was once again abandoning working-class people while supporting the interests of billionaires.
“Once again. Just like the Paramount Merger, Gavin Newsom does what he always does. Sells out the working-class people for the billionaires again and again. Not only that, but endorses a bill that will make it impossible to tax the wealthy at all.,” Ruffalo wrote on X on Wednesday.

The Avengers star explicitly connected the Prop 42 dispute to his previous criticism of Newsom. His post pointed to the Paramount merger as another example of what he considers the governor’s repeated betrayal of working people.

Ruffalo has targeted Newsom before, most notably over the governor’s support for the merger between Paramount and Warner Brothers Discovery. That dispute became another opportunity for the actor to denounce Newsom’s decisions.
In Sept., Ruffalo accused Newsom of working to help Donald Trump over the merger deal. The accusation placed Trump at the center of Ruffalo’s criticism of the California governor’s position.
The rabid antisemitic actor also described the settlement as a betrayal. Ruffalo called it a “huge win to Trump.”

The wealth tax and Paramount disputes are not the only issues that have prompted Ruffalo to lash out at Newsom. The actor also blasted the governor for vetoing a state AI bill early this month.

Ruffalo called Newsom’s veto of the AI safety bill “a mistake.” He also asked the public to “follow the money” when examining the governor’s decisions.
The actor expanded upon that criticism in an essay for TIME magazine. There, he emphasized his belief that AI has already become a technology with consequences for people’s everyday lives.
“AI is now a real-life technology, and love it or hate it, most everyone agrees it will make a massive impact on all of our real lives,” Ruffalo wrote.
The TIME essay was titled, “Governor Newsom’s Veto on the AI Bill Was a Mistake.” Ruffalo used the piece to state his opposition to Newsom’s decision on the proposed AI safety measure.
His Wednesday post returned the focus to taxes and Newsom’s backing of Prop 42. Ruffalo’s complaint was not merely that Newsom opposed a new wealth tax, but that the measure would make taxing wealthy Californians impossible.
Newsom, meanwhile, framed the proposal around protecting savings from new state taxes. The conflicting statements produced another public clash between the governor and the outspoken Marvel actor.
Ruffalo’s latest broadside adds Prop 42 to his growing list of grievances against Newsom. Across the wealth tax proposal, the Paramount and Warner Brothers Discovery merger, and the AI bill veto, the actor has repeatedly and publicly challenged the governor.
