New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani demanded that President Donald Trump halt all ICE enforcement across New York after a federal agent shot and wounded an illegal alien during an operation in the Bronx on Thursday. The shooting triggered protests, street confrontations and arrests.

Speaking at a news conference late Thursday night, Mamdani said he had discussed the shooting with Trump during a conversation lasting about two hours. The mayor said he pressed the president to release the wounded man, but the effort failed.

Mamdani also declared that New York City wants U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents removed. “All they do is terrorize this city,” the mayor said of the agency.

The mayor accused ICE of operating “with impunity” and spreading “chaos and terror” across the country. He also alleged that ICE has killed more people than it has saved.

“Today's shooting is only further devastating confirmation of what we have long known,” Mamdani said. He later confirmed that ICE agents had transported the wounded man out of the hospital.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said she also spoke with Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin. She called for ICE enforcement operations in New York to stop and requested the public release of body camera footage.

“Tonight, I spoke with President Trump and DHS Secretary Mullin about the shooting in Marble Hill,” Hochul wrote on X. “I expressed outrage on behalf of New Yorkers and urged them to halt ICE enforcement operations in New York. I also asked that any body camera footage of the shooting be released to the public so we can establish the facts and get to the truth.”

According to DHS, ICE agents were attempting to arrest a wanted man from the Dominican Republic at around 4 p.m. Thursday when an agent opened fire and wounded him. The department did not provide details about what led to the gunfire.

“ICE officers immediately rendered aid. The individual is alive and at a local hospital. The FBI and HSI are on the scene. The incident remains under investigation. More information will be shared as it becomes available,” DHS said in a statement.

DHS described the wounded man as an illegal immigrant with a prior grand larceny conviction. The agency said he also had previous arrests involving assault, robbery, drug possession and weapons possession, and it alleged that he had ties to the Trinitarios gang.

Later Thursday night, New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch identified the man as 28 years old. Tisch said a boy, age 5, who was believed to be the man’s son, was inside the vehicle during the shooting.

“Based on evidence collected at the scene, we know that at least one ICE agent discharged the seven rounds, striking the driver in the neck below his left ear,” Tisch said. She added that the boy was not injured and was being cared for by a family member.

DHS said New York City police had arrested the man on Dec. 7, 2023, before releasing him several days later. The agency blamed New York City’s sanctuary policies for that release.

Hundreds of demonstrators gathered outside NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital, where the wounded man had been receiving treatment. Protesters chanted “ICE off our streets” and “No justice, no peace” while officers began setting up barricades.

Protesters and police were seen shoving one another during the demonstration, and some demonstrators threw water bottles at officers. The crowd also chanted, “From Palestine to Mexico, all these walls have got to go.”

Police made some arrests during the demonstration. The confrontations unfolded as Mamdani and Hochul pushed the Trump administration to halt immigration enforcement in New York and release footage connected to the shooting.
