Venezuela’s deposed socialist dictator Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, are expected to face new charges connected to the alleged torture of American citizens who were held as political prisoners during Maduro’s rule, as reported by Breitbart.
Maduro and Flores have remained at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn since U.S. forces arrested them in January. The arrests occurred during a law enforcement operation in Caracas, Venezuela.

The couple is expected to stand trial in June 2027 on multiple drug trafficking charges. Reports from CNN, Fox News, and other outlets indicate that additional accusations could soon be added to the case.

The new charges would reportedly accuse Maduro and Flores of playing a role in the unjust detention of more than a dozen Americans. They would also address the alleged torture of American detainees under the socialist regime.
Fox News reported that the charges are expected to be announced on Thursday, October 8. Maduro’s attorney, Barry Pollack, said he “has not been provided any notice” that new charges may be coming against his client.
Pollack is challenging the legality of Maduro’s arrest and argues that the deposed dictator should have “immunity.” Prosecutors have responded by pointing out that the Venezuelan socialist regime is not joining Maduro in claiming immunity.
For years, Maduro’s regime detained American citizens and numerous other foreign nationals as political prisoners. Those detentions occurred in greater proportion during the final two years of Maduro’s rule, when about a dozen Americans were held on accusations described as spurious.

Maduro repeatedly alleged that the detained Americans and other foreign nationals were involved in plots to assassinate him and leading members of his socialist regime. The now deposed dictator never presented evidence that could substantiate those accusations.
Several Americans held in Venezuela were released during the opening days of President Donald Trump’s second term. Their release followed successful negotiations conducted by the Trump administration.
Former U.S. Marine corporal Matthew Heath and Osman Khan, both previously detained in Venezuela, filed a lawsuit against Maduro in a Miami federal court in January 2025. The lawsuit accused Maduro of leading a vast “criminal enterprise.”
Heath and Khan also alleged that Maduro used unjustly imprisoned Americans as “bargaining chips” during negotiations with the United States. Their lawsuit described serious allegations of torture and inhumane treatment by Maduro regime officials.

According to the lawsuit, officials subjected the two men to “waterboarding, electrocution, threats of rape with a nightstick,” and “mind-altering medications.” Those claims form part of the broader allegations surrounding the regime’s treatment of detained Americans.
The claimants further accused the Maduro regime of subjecting them to El Tigrito, translated as The Little Tiger. The source described El Tigrito as a widely known and documented torture cell extensively used by the regime to punish dissidents.
Venezuelan dissidents living in Madrid, Spain, gathered to celebrate the U.S. attacks in Caracas and the subsequent arrests of Maduro and Flores by U.S. forces. Their gathering followed the removal of the socialist ruler and his wife.
Flores is due in federal court on Thursday for a bond hearing. Maduro’s regime had given her the title of “First Combatant,” a made up socialist designation that allegedly elevated the dictator’s wife above First Lady status.
Following the arrests, Maduro’s former vice president, Delcy Rodríguez, assumed control of the socialist regime as Venezuela’s current “Acting President.” Rodríguez met with Trump last month on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly.
During her U.N. speech, Rodríguez made no mention of her former boss. She vowed to hold new elections in Venezuela, although she did not specify a date for those elections.
Maduro and Flores remain detained in Brooklyn as they await their expected June 2027 trial. The reported new charges would add accusations involving detained Americans and alleged torture to the multiple drug trafficking charges already facing the couple.
