  • Fiscal 2027 targets rise to 36,300 airmen and 1,402 guardians.

  • The Navy, Army, Army Reserve, Army Special Forces and Marine Corps also met or exceeded their recruiting goals.

The Department of the Air Force met its fiscal 2026 recruiting goals, bringing in 31,950 airmen and 730 guardians. The result closed the fiscal year with both service targets fully achieved.

According to a Thursday release, the department credited consistent performance throughout its recruiting squadrons. Officials did not attribute the successful year to one program, campaign or isolated effort.

The Air Force had announced in April that it reached its recruiting goal five months ahead of schedule. At that point, the stated goal stood at 32,750 airmen and 730 guardians.

That April announcement emphasized the success of the Delayed Entry Program. The program functions as a waiting list for recruits who have signed contracts and received approval to join the military but must wait for space in Basic Military Training.

The projection was later adjusted to the final goal of 31,950 airmen and 730 guardians. The change was based on retention and the availability of training dates, allowing the department to meet the revised objective in full.

“Our recruiters did what they do every year — they worked the mission every day,” Col. Lacresha Merkle, Air Force Recruiting Service commander, said in the release. “Hitting the number is the expectation, and our recruiters delivered.”

Planning is already underway for the next fiscal year, with Thursday marking the first day of fiscal 2027. The department is moving from its completed 2026 recruiting campaign directly into preparations for a considerably larger objective.

Recruiting strategies are adjusted according to labor market trends, data measuring the propensity to serve and demand signals from different career fields, the statement said. Those factors guide how recruiting personnel approach the department’s accession requirements.

For fiscal 2027, the department established a goal of 36,300 airmen and 1,402 guardians, an Air Force spokesperson told Military Times. Both figures are higher than the final fiscal 2026 goals that the department reported meeting.

The new Air Force target calls for 4,350 more airmen than the fiscal 2026 result of 31,950. The Space Force goal increases by 672 guardians compared with the 730 enlisted during fiscal 2026.

Air Force Recruiting Service, known as AFRS, is headquartered at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph, Texas. It oversees enlisted, officer and Space Force accessions throughout the department.

Recruiting personnel operate from squadrons across the country. They assist applicants through the Delayed Entry Program before those recruits report for Basic Military Training.

The recruiting command also emphasized the responsibility that comes with guiding each applicant through the process. Merkle described that obligation as a constant part of recruiters’ daily interactions with prospective service members.

“Every applicant who signs that contract trusts us with their future, and our recruiters carry that responsibility into every conversation, every single day,” Merkle said.

The Air and Space Forces were not the only military services to meet their fiscal 2026 recruiting goals. The Navy exceeded its objective by adding 45,112 new sailors, while the Army reached its goal with 61,500 new soldiers.

The Army Reserve and Army Special Forces also met their recruiting goals for the first time in more than a decade. They brought in 14,322 and 2,940 soldiers, respectively.

The Marine Corps likewise announced that it exceeded its fiscal 2026 recruiting goal. Its totals included 31,250 enlisted Marines, 1,672 officers and 3,503 prior service reserve Marines.

Across the Air Force and Space Force, attention now turns to the larger fiscal 2027 requirements. Recruiting squadrons will pursue those goals while continuing to manage applicants, training availability and career field demands through the department’s accession system.
