Cuba was plunged into a total blackout Friday after the country’s electrical grid collapsed yet again, according to the U.S. Embassy in Havana. The latest failure left the island facing widespread power, cellphone and internet disruptions.

The embassy attributed the total power failure to the “collapse of Cuba’s electrical grid.”

Cuban regime media reported that officials were still investigating the cause and that the timeline for restoring power remained unknown.

The outage marked the seventh national blackout in Cuba this year.

The country’s previous national outage occurred just last month, adding to a grim pattern for an electrical system already described as deeply unstable.

The U.S. Embassy issued a direct warning to Americans following the collapse. “All U.S. citizens in Cuba or planning to travel to Cuba should be aware and plan accordingly.

There are reports of cellphone and internet outages,” the embassy said.

The embassy described Cuba’s electrical grid as “increasingly unstable” and said the weakness had resulted in “multiple” nationwide power outages during the last few months.

Friday’s collapse was therefore not an isolated breakdown.

The warning extended beyond the immediate national blackout.

According to the embassy, power failures have become more frequent and are lasting longer, leaving residents and travelers to contend with an unreliable electrical system.

“The electrical system remains vulnerable, and additional regular outages have been occurring more frequently and for longer periods.

Scheduled power cuts occur daily, and unscheduled outages persist throughout Cuba,” the embassy added.
