Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed Tuesday that its naval forces captured an American uncrewed submarine near the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz.
The announcement offered a rare public look at the increasingly important role of autonomous underwater systems in contested waters.
Iranian state media identified the vessel as a Dive LD, a large autonomous underwater vehicle manufactured by California based military technology company Anduril.
The 19 foot submersible is designed for extended missions beneath the surface without requiring a human crew aboard.

“We trapped one of the most modern, intelligent and unmanned submarines of the terrorist American army at the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz.
This submersible is equipped with the latest technologies,” the Revolutionary Guards Navy said in a statement carried by Iranian state media.
The War Department offered a considerably less dramatic explanation for the missing vessel.
A spokesperson said an underwater drone had “malfunctioned more than a day ago.”

“It was surveying regional waters in support of ongoing operations.
The defective drone was an older model that neither collected sensitive data nor carried any classified sonar or radar equipment,” the spokesperson said.

The competing accounts could not immediately be reconciled, and Reuters said it was unable to independently verify Iran’s claim.
The War Department statement also did not directly address whether Iranian forces had recovered or captured the malfunctioning vehicle.
Anduril did not respond to a request for comment about the reported incident.
That leaves Tehran showcasing what it calls a high technology prize while Washington portrays the episode as the recovery of an expendable and defective older system.
The distinction matters because Iran would undoubtedly seek propaganda value and technical intelligence from any recovered American military platform.
Still, if the War Department description is accurate, Tehran may have hauled in something far less valuable than its state media presentation suggests.
According to Anduril, the Dive LD can perform missions including intelligence gathering, mine countermeasures and mapping of the seabed.
It can also inspect critical underwater infrastructure, including communications cables and pipelines that increasingly have become potential targets during periods of international tension.
The vehicle is designed to remain deployed for as long as 10 days before returning to a base or recovery point.
It can descend to depths of up to 6,000 meters, or approximately 19,700 feet, giving commanders access to areas that would be difficult, expensive or dangerous to survey with crewed vessels.
A United States military news outlet reported in 2024 that individual Dive LD units cost roughly $2.5 million.
That is not pocket change, but it remains modest compared with the cost of crewed submarines, specialized ships and the trained personnel required to operate them.
The incident also highlights the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow maritime passage connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea.
American forces regularly operate around the waterway to monitor threats, protect navigation and maintain awareness of Iranian military activity.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard routinely uses aggressive messaging to portray routine encounters or equipment recoveries as major battlefield victories.
In this case, however, the presence of a sophisticated American underwater vehicle would demonstrate just how heavily modern militaries now rely on machines to watch dangerous maritime approaches.
The United States military has been investing heavily in uncrewed naval systems, including both underwater vehicles and surface vessels.
These platforms can monitor enormous stretches of ocean, collect information and track hostile ships or submarines without placing American sailors directly in harm’s way.
Autonomous systems also provide commanders with less expensive options for persistent surveillance.
Losing one is still undesirable, particularly when an adversary may attempt to study its construction, but it carries none of the human consequences associated with losing a crewed aircraft or submarine.
Whether Iranian forces actively trapped the vehicle or merely retrieved it after a malfunction remains unproven.
Tehran gets its headline, while American officials maintain that the drone carried no sensitive information, no classified sonar and no classified radar technology worth celebrating.
The episode nevertheless serves as a reminder that the contest beneath strategic waterways is expanding rapidly.
As the United States fields more autonomous platforms, Iran and other adversaries will keep trying to detect, recover and exploit them, even when the supposed trophy amounts to little more than a broken robot.
