Florida Democratic Senate candidate Angie Nixon took political rhetoric to a bizarre new level Monday, declaring that President Donald Trump “is basically a communist.”

The accusation came during an appearance on MS NOW’s “The Beat.”

Nixon used the interview to promote her campaign and portray herself as an experienced organizer with an expanding operation across Florida.

She also claimed that hundreds of volunteers recently knocked on doors for her campaign throughout the state.

“Folks don’t realize, but I am not someone who just popped up overnight. I have been a union organizer and a community organizer in the state for the past nearly two decades, and so I’ve built a really unique, diverse coalition across the state, and people have been leaning in. Just this weekend alone, we had over 700 volunteers that were out on doors knocking for us across the state of Florida, and that’s only expanding.”

The candidate then shifted her attention to Ashley Moody, arguing that Moody is too closely aligned with Trump.

Rather than sticking to familiar Democratic complaints about the president, Nixon reached for the communist label.

Nixon attempted to connect her accusation to Venezuela and claimed that Trump had taken control of the country and its oil reserves.

Her description of communism, however, sounded more like a political talking point assembled on the fly than a serious economic definition.

She continued, “Ashley Moody is so in total lockstep with Donald Trump. You just had a gentleman on who was talking about how he has taken over Venezuela. That sounds like communism to me. They’re taking over their oil reserves and wanting to sell them off. That is the epitome of what communism is.”

Communism generally involves state ownership or control of industries, property, and economic production.

Selling oil assets does not automatically transform a leader into a communist, no matter how useful the word may seem during a television interview.

Nixon nevertheless pressed ahead, accusing Moody of “kissing up” to Trump while also pointing to the president’s interactions with North Korea.

Diplomacy with a communist government, in Nixon’s telling, apparently becomes evidence that the American president shares that ideology.

She added, “She is, you know, kissing up to a president that is basically a communist. He’s taking control of private industries in another country. He’s also cozying up to someone like the guy in North Korea who is a known communist. And so Ashley Moody is bad for Florida.”

The charge marks an unusual reversal for Democrats, who have spent years portraying Trump as everything from a capitalist villain to an authoritarian nationalist.

Nixon has now added communist to the collection, proving that consistency is not always required when the television cameras are rolling.

Her argument also treats direct engagement with foreign adversaries as ideological agreement.

By that standard, nearly every American president who negotiated with a hostile regime could be accused of embracing its political system.

Trump has long presented himself as an opponent of socialism and communism, particularly when speaking to voters with family connections to Cuba, Venezuela, and other countries harmed by leftist regimes.

Florida’s political landscape makes Nixon’s choice of language especially striking.

The state is home to many voters who understand communism through personal or family experience, not through cable television word games.

Tossing around the label without a coherent explanation could prove risky in a statewide campaign.

Nixon’s comments were aimed at damaging Moody by tying her as closely as possible to Trump.

Yet the attack may say more about the Democratic candidate’s campaign strategy than it does about either Trump or Moody.

For now, Florida voters have been given a preview of Nixon’s pitch.

She wants them to believe that supporting Trump means supporting a communist, a claim likely to earn applause from parts of the left while leaving everyone else checking the dictionary.
