Randy Quaid is publicly criticizing the decision to cast Anne Hathaway opposite Tom Cruise in the upcoming sequel to the 1990 racing movie “Days of Thunder,” arguing that Nicole Kidman should return to the franchise instead, as reported by Page Six.

Quaid, 75, appeared in the original film alongside Cruise and Kidman.

He took his objections to social media Saturday, shortly after Cruise and Hathaway appeared together in an Instagram Reel announcing that the sequel is scheduled to arrive in theaters in 2028.

“We need Nicole [Kidman] back. Don’t be a pussy @TomCruise,” Quaid wrote on X Saturday. “You need the original girl. It’s not personal; it’s filmmaking. Anne isn’t sexy, because and if you haven’t noticed, she’s pregnant.”

Quaid followed up with another post in which he expanded on his criticism of Hathaway's casting and connected his objections to what he believes is the audience for the NASCAR-themed movie.

“Anne Hathaway is a leftist, woke, horrible choice for DAYS OF THUNDER NASCAR audience who are MAGA. The sexy older chick for Tom in this film needs to be Nicole. That’s the casting that would sell the idea.”

“This is a weird thing, like they want it to come out and tank,” he added.

Hathaway, 43, is set to play a new character in the sequel. She will portray an engineer and team owner, while Cruise is returning as Cole Trickle, the NASCAR driver he played in the original movie.

The casting marks a different direction for the female lead from the 1990 film. Kidman played Dr. Claire Lewicki opposite Cruise in the original “Days of Thunder.”

Cruise and Kidman later married but divorced after Cruise filed for divorce in 2001. The former couple have not worked together since.

Hathaway is currently expecting her third child with her husband, Adam Shulman. She acknowledged her pregnancy during the video announcing the sequel and explained that production would follow the birth.

“I’ll have this baby, then make the movie,” Hathaway said in the announcement video.

Cruise responded, “That’s a good idea.”

The sequel is expected to continue the story in the world of NASCAR, with Cruise returning to his role as Cole Trickle.

Quaid, however, does not appear to have been asked to reprise his role as Tim Daland, the racing team owner who recruited Trickle in the original film.

The original “Days of Thunder” was released in 1990 and starred Cruise, Kidman and Quaid. The movie followed Trickle as he pursued a career in NASCAR and joined Daland’s racing team.

The sequel is being produced by Cruise, Jerry Bruckheimer and Tommy Harper, according to Deadline. Jonathan Levine is set to direct the film.

The new movie is currently expected to be released June 2, 2028.

Cruise and Hathaway publicly announced the project through social media, giving audiences their first look at the two actors together in connection with the upcoming production.

Quaid’s criticism focuses primarily on Hathaway's casting and his preference for bringing Kidman back into the franchise.

His comments also point to what he believes would be a better fit between the movie’s NASCAR audience and its casting.

Hathaway's role is not a replacement for Kidman's original character. Instead, she is playing a new character who is described as both an engineer and team owner.

There has been no indication in the supplied information that Kidman has been attached to the sequel.

Quaid's comments come more than three decades after the original movie brought Cruise and Kidman together on screen.

Their personal relationship later ended in divorce, while their professional collaboration ended with the original film.

For now, Cruise remains the only returning lead actor identified for the sequel, with Hathaway joining the cast in a new role.

Production plans will follow Hathaway’s pregnancy, while the film remains scheduled for its June 2028 theatrical release.
