Rep. Tim Burchett criticized Washington, D.C., over an ongoing sewage issue he says has allowed millions of gallons of raw sewage to flow into the Potomac River, calling the situation both a public health threat and an environmental disaster.
“Hey, everybody. Tim Burchett, if y'all saw it or not, but Washington, DC is a sewer, literally,” Burchett said.
“You know, you've heard me call it that. Everybody says it's a swamp.”
Burchett said the problem stems from a broken sewer line in Maryland.

“There has been a busted sewer line up here in Maryland, and then it flows through Washington, DC, the Potomac,” he said.
“And literally, millions and millions of gallons of raw sewage are flowing in the Potomac and then going to the ocean, of course, all the diseases that it can carry.”
He described the situation as a danger to both people and wildlife.
“You know, it's horrible situation on humans, but it's even worse on the wildlife, the fish,” Burchett said. “Of course, it causes a bloom and everything dies.”

Burchett also criticized what he described as a lack of federal response, pointing to the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
“But but the interesting thing about it is, who's going to assist in cleaning that up, FEMA,” he said. “And who of the Democrats while they're vacationing on your dime in Munich, they voted to shut FEMA down, and it is a it is a disaster for them.”
He credited President Trump with intervening in the situation.
“But thank goodness, President Trump has stepped in, and he's going to clean it up, literally what the Democrats will not do,” Burchett said.

Burchett questioned why the issue has not generated broader national attention.
“And why isn't there national outrage?” he asked.
“So all you Democrats and environmentalists out there. Save me your fake dag gum outraged over environmental issues when literally millions of gallons of raw sewage are flowing into the Potomac and have been for for several weeks now.”
He described the situation as ironic and accused the national media of ignoring the story.
“It's the irony of that is just incredible, and the national media, of course, isn't picking up on it, because why?” Burchett said.
“Democrat controlled state? Democrat controlled Washington, DC, and they've just fumbled this thing.”
Burchett contrasted what he characterized as President Trump’s response with past leadership approaches.
“So thank goodness for President Trump stepping up, because that's what we need,” he said. “We don't need a study. You know, past Republican leaders, they would wring their hands and call in the experts and study it for a while.”

He concluded by expressing confidence that the issue would be addressed.
“It's going to be cleaned up, and President Trump's going to do it,” Burchett said.
“So thank you, President Trump. Thank you all for sending me here. I'm a little wound up about this one.”
