A 9-year-old boy and a 10-year-old girl in Ohio face serious charges following a violent assault on a 5-year-old autistic girl, who was left in a field for hours.
The incident occurred near Cleveland’s Collinwood Athletic Complex, with authorities reporting the victim was found beaten, urinated on, and sexually assaulted.
The boy has been accused of attempted murder and rape, while the girl faces related charges.
The victim was discovered behind the athletic complex hours after the attack, according to Cleveland.com.

She required several days of hospitalization due to the severity of her injuries.
The case came to light when the boy made his first court appearance on Thursday in Cuyahoga County Juvenile Court.
He had missed a scheduled court date the previous week, prompting Judge Kristin Sweeney to threaten a warrant if he failed to appear on Thursday.

No legal guardian was present during the hearing.
During the Thursday session, a prosecutor stated, "This case results in a 5-year-old being left naked, beaten, and urinated upon in a field and left for hours. At a very minimum, the state is requesting home detention with an ankle monitor."
The 10-year-old suspect had appeared in court the week prior, where Sweeney ordered home detention and an ankle monitor.
On November 14, during the boy’s hearing, Sweeney placed him in the emergency temporary care and custody of the Cuyahoga County Division of Children and Family Services.
He arrived with two relatives but no legal guardian.
An emergency custody hearing followed on Friday, where Sweeney granted the agency custody of the boy.
She noted, "Yesterday, I placed (the boy) on home detention, and his mother did not come to court to pick him up from the home detention office."
Sweeney added that the boy’s father is deceased and his mother is currently hospitalized, with an expected release in the coming week.

Assistant county prosecutor Anthony Beery indicated that the family services agency "continues to explore the family" to determine if custody should return to a relative.
For now, the boy resides in a residential placement, an out-of-home therapeutic setting for minors needing intensive support.
Both children are scheduled to return to court in January following court-ordered competency evaluations.
The evaluations were requested after the boy’s attorney, Edward Borkowski, and the girl’s attorney, Caitlyn Idoine, expressed concerns in court filings that the children may not understand the proceedings or assist their defense counsel.

The case cannot proceed if the juveniles are deemed incompetent.
Witnesses reported seeing three children involved in the attack.
Several juveniles told investigators that a young girl led the victim to the field behind the athletic complex, where she was hit in the face with a rock, strangled, and undressed.
The juveniles guided authorities to the location, where the girl was found naked and curled in a fetal position.
The victim’s mother addressed the court on Thursday, pleading with Sweeney not to allow the suspects to return home.
She said, "They changed my daughter’s life."
The investigation continues as authorities work to gather more evidence.
The Cuyahoga County Division of Children and Family Services is assessing the family situation to determine the best course for the boy’s custody.

The competency evaluations will play a critical role in the next steps of the legal process.
The community remains focused on the recovery of the 5-year-old victim, who endured significant trauma from the incident.
The case has drawn attention to juvenile crime and the challenges of handling such young offenders in the legal system.
Court records indicate the need for therapeutic support, given the boy’s current residential placement.
The January court date will provide further clarity on the children’s ability to participate in their defense.
No additional charges have been announced, and the identity of the third child mentioned by witnesses remains under investigation.
The victim’s family has requested privacy as she recovers from her injuries.

In many “civilised” countries the 9 year old is below the age of criminal responsibility, but this does not mean we should be any less concerned for the welfare of the child victim.
