Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers were attacked in two separate incidents in Illinois on Thursday, when two illegal aliens allegedly used their cars as weapons against federal law enforcement.

According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the first incident occurred in Norridge, Illinois.

Authorities said Miguel Escareno De Loera, an illegal alien from Mexico, drove his car into an ICE vehicle twice before jumping a curb and crashing into a stop sign.

DHS said Escareno De Loera was taken into custody following the incident.

In the second case, which took place in Bensenville, Illinois, Widman Osberto Lopez-Funes, an illegal alien from Guatemala, allegedly attempted to drive his vehicle at ICE agents who were carrying out an immigration enforcement operation.

Lopez-Funes was also arrested after the incident.

Both men are now in custody as investigations continue.

DHS described the attacks as deliberate efforts to harm officers “carrying out their sworn duty to uphold our nation’s immigration laws.”

The incidents are the latest in a string of attacks on ICE officers nationwide.

In September, a sniper fired at an ICE facility in Dallas, Texas. Earlier in June, ICE personnel in Los Angeles, California, were targeted with Molotov cocktails.

Federal officials have noted an increase in violent encounters directed at immigration enforcement agents over the past year.

In its statement Thursday, DHS condemned the escalating violence against federal officers and attributed some of the hostility to rhetoric from Illinois leadership.

The release specifically named Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, criticizing them for their public stance against ICE.

“The continued anti-ICE rhetoric spewed by Governor Pritzker and Mayor Johnson contributes to ICE law enforcement facing a more than a 1000% increase in assaults against them,” the DHS statement read.

Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said the department was grateful that no agents were killed in the latest incidents.

“Thankfully, none of our law enforcement was killed because of these deranged criminals’ attacks on law enforcement,” McLaughlin said.

“This is exactly what happens when Governor Pritzker, Mayor Johnson, and other sanctuary politicians demonize ICE and encourage illegal aliens to resist law enforcement. Our ICE law enforcement is facing a more than 1000% increase in assaults — including cars — being used as weapons against them.”

McLaughlin stressed that individuals who attack law enforcement will face serious consequences.

“Secretary Noem has been clear: anyone who assaults law enforcement will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” she said.

DHS reaffirmed its commitment to backing federal agents and ensuring public safety despite the rise in targeted violence.

“DHS will restore law and order and continue to protect American communities from criminal illegal aliens who choose violence,” the department stated.

Federal authorities said the investigations into both incidents remain ongoing.

Escareno De Loera and Lopez-Funes face charges related to their alleged attacks, though DHS did not specify what additional legal actions may be pursued.

The back-to-back incidents in Norridge and Bensenville highlight growing tensions around immigration enforcement in Illinois, a state with sanctuary policies that limit cooperation with federal immigration authorities.
