The Trump administration announced new measures to increase security at Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities nationwide following a deadly attack on an ICE field office in Dallas, Texas.

The shooting left one detainee dead and two others injured after a gunman reportedly targeted immigration enforcement agents.

President Donald Trump directed Secretary of War Pete Hegseth to deploy troops to Portland, Oregon, citing ongoing unrest at the city’s ICE detention facility, where clashes between protesters and law enforcement have continued for months.

“I am directing Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, to provide all necessary Troops to protect War ravaged Portland, and any of our ICE Facilities under siege from attack by Antifa, and other domestic terrorists,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post Saturday. He added that troops were authorized to use “full force” if necessary.

The White House also released a statement Friday on its website titled “Democrats’ Unhinged Crusade Against ICE Fuels Bloodshed.”

The article linked years of anti-ICE rhetoric from Democratic officials to escalating violence against immigration enforcement personnel.

“The carnage in Dallas, Texas — where a maniac with ‘ANTI-ICE’ ammo gunned down an ICE field office in an attack clearly targeted at ICE personnel — lays bare the deadly consequences of Democrats’ unhinged crusade against our border enforcement,” the statement read.

According to the White House, Democrats have “spent years vilifying ICE as ‘fascists,’ ‘the Gestapo,’ and ‘slave patrols,’ inciting a 1,000% surge in assaults on agents and a wave of Radical Left terror.”

The statement included a list of 29 Democratic officials at various levels of government whose public comments about ICE have been cited as contributing to the hostile environment toward immigration enforcement.

Among the most notable remarks highlighted were from three governors considered possible 2028 Democratic presidential contenders:

  • Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz referred to ICE as the “modern-day Gestapo.”
  • California Gov. Gavin Newsom likened ICE to “secret police,” calling them “authoritarian” and insisting there was a “right to push back.”
  • Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker claimed the U.S. was becoming “Nazi Germany” because ICE was “grabbing people off the street… and disappearing them.”

The list also included comments from several major city mayors:

  • Boston Mayor Michelle Wu compared ICE agents to the neo-Nazi group NSC-131.
  • Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson described ICE as “secret police” who were “terrorizing our communities.”
  • Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass claimed ICE had “kidnapped” a woman on her way to work, a claim federal officials denied as fabricated.

The White House argued these comments demonstrate a broader pattern of incendiary language from Democratic officials, which they said has fueled hostility against ICE and emboldened violent acts targeting immigration enforcement.

Gov. Newsom’s press office responded by accusing the Trump administration of being “reckless” and “dangerous” in highlighting Democrats’ words, claiming it was the President who “must tone it down.”

The Dallas attack marked the latest incident in a series of confrontations targeting ICE facilities across the country.

Federal officials have emphasized that security enhancements and troop deployments are intended to prevent further violence and ensure the safety of personnel and detainees at ICE locations.

Investigations into the Dallas shooting remain ongoing.

Authorities have not released further details about the suspect or the type of ammunition reportedly marked with “ANTI-ICE” messages.
