Three school districts in Florida will participate in pilot programs testing drones designed to intervene in active shooter situations within seconds, as reported by The New York Post.

The drones, developed by Campus Guardian Angel, a Texas-based security company, are equipped with non-lethal pepper spray pellets, alarms, two-way communication systems, and cameras that provide live video feeds to authorities.

The drones are stored in secured charging stations on campus and can be activated by school officials through a silent alarm or other mechanisms. Once deployed, they are operated by FAA-certified pilots located in Texas.

Miami-Dade County Public Schools, the state’s largest district, has already expressed interest in the program and conducted test runs at AcadeMir Preparatory High School in July.

AcadeMir has approximately 1,100 students enrolled, while Miami-Dade’s largest high school, John A. Ferguson Senior High School, has more than 4,000 students.

Justin Marston, founder and CEO of Campus Guardian Angel, said the goal is speed. “In a school shooting, most of the death happens in the first 120 seconds, so it’s really about how quickly can you get there to engage the shooter,” Marston told CBS News.

The drones can also use a glass punch to break windows and create distractions during emergencies. Each fleet includes six drones, with a purchase cost of $15,000, plus an estimated $1,000 monthly operating fee per 500 students.

Depending on student population, schools may require between three and 15 fleets.

The system requires coordination between the company’s command team, school officials, and law enforcement before any engagement. The drones are not activated independently but follow a flight plan overseen by a designated commander.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has allocated $557,000 in the 2025-2026 state budget to fund drone demonstrations. Additional costs for purchasing and installing the technology across participating districts have not yet been determined.

Since the 2018 Parkland high school shooting, more than 60 school shootings have been reported across Florida, according to the K-12 School Shooting Database.

The most recent occurred in April at Florida State University, where two people were killed by the son of a local deputy. Some students at the university that day had previously survived or lost friends during the Parkland tragedy.

The drone technology has also been tested in several Texas school districts, including Boerne ISD, Highland Park ISD, Lancaster ISD, and Texas Hill Country.

Authorities say the program aims to provide schools with an additional tool to respond quickly to life-threatening emergencies, while law enforcement coordinates entry and strategy using the live video feeds provided by the drones.
