Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem condemned New York City leadership and its sanctuary policies after an off-duty U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer was shot in the face Saturday night in Manhattan’s Fort Washington Park, as reported by Newsmax.
At a press conference Monday following a hospital visit with the wounded agent, Noem said the shooting was the direct result of policies enacted by Mayor Eric Adams and the Democrat-controlled City Council.

“There’s absolutely zero reason that someone who is scum of the earth like this should be running loose on the streets of New York City,” Noem said.
“Make no mistake, this officer is in the hospital today, fighting for his life, because of the policies of the mayor of the city and the City Council and the people that were in charge of keeping the public safe refused to do so.”

The alleged shooter, 21-year-old Dominican national Miguel Francisco Mora Nunez, is an illegal alien with multiple prior arrests in New York. Authorities say Nunez and another illegal migrant suspect ambushed the federal officer and a friend in the park Saturday night.
The New York Post reported that Nunez had been arrested at least four times previously but was released without bail under the city’s criminal justice reforms.
Noem confirmed that Nunez crossed into the U.S. illegally in April 2023 and was subsequently relocated to New York City.

“I want to remind you that this individual had been arrested four different times before this act happened on Saturday night — arrested and released again and again and again,” Noem said. “What did we think was going to happen from policies like that?”
President Donald Trump responded to the shooting in a Truth Social post Monday, writing:
“Crime in American Cities started to significantly rise when they went to cashless bail. The worst criminals are flooding our streets and endangering even our great law enforcement officers. It is a complete disaster, and must be ended, immediately!”
Mayor Eric Adams, elected as a Democrat, is now running for reelection as an independent following legal troubles that include a federal bribery investigation.

He has publicly criticized former President Joe Biden’s migrant relocation efforts, warning they were “unsustainable” and could “destroy” the city.
“When I look at what Mayor Adams has done to New York City, it breaks my heart to see the families that have suffered because of his policies,” Noem added Monday.
Both Nunez and the second suspect remain in custody as the federal investigation continues. The wounded federal officer remains hospitalized in critical condition.

Very poorly written article. Was the agent shot because he was an agent or was he a victim of random crime? It is a terrible thing for any honest citizen to suffer a criminal attack like this. People should be safe on the streets. This reporting ignores everyone else who was responsible for these policies. Adams didn’t invent sanctuary, it was instituted in 1989 by Ed Koch and sadly supported by Guliani. Everyone in NYC is responsible for this attack. Anyone who voted for people who support illegal immigrants is responsible. There are many, many good people who are illegal immigrants but they are criminals. They should leave and apply for citizenship properly. If I moved into an empty house and lived in it, raised my family in it, never paying property taxes, a mortgage, or rent, no one, not anyone, would support my right to live there when the police came to remove me. There is the law and there is lawlessness. When we wink at one crime, we set anarchy in motion. This is why we have anti-ICE riots and ANTIFA. We gave an inch and now they want more.
