Comedian and talk show host Bill Maher said he was never a member of the Democratic Party, despite commonly being associated with it throughout his career, as reported by The New York Post.
During the latest episode of his “Club Random” podcast released Saturday, Maher clarified his political stance while speaking with actor Esai Morales.
“I never was a Democrat to begin with. I always like caucus with the Democrats and I generally vote for them.”
He added that his political choices were often based on which party appeared “less scary and insane” at the time.

Maher went on to express concern about the increasing extremism he sees on the left, saying:
“I wait for the day when it evens out. We’re approaching that because they have gotten crazier, and that’s a lot of what you’re referencing. But I never said I left the party ’cause I wasn’t there to begin with.”
The remarks came after Morales mentioned hearing Maher say the Democratic Party had “left” him, a phrase Maher disputed. “I didn’t say that,” Maher responded, stating that Morales was “conflating what people have said in the past about leaving parties.”

Maher, known for his political commentary, has recently stepped up his criticisms of Democrats.
On Friday, he targeted ABC’s The View, claiming Democrats “need to do something” about the program after co-host Whoopi Goldberg compared life for Black Americans to the oppression faced by women in Iran.
He also voiced agreement with Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.), who warned that the left’s defense of violent anti-ICE protests in Los Angeles could help President Trump.

Maher said such scenes, like one involving a protester waving a Mexican flag as a Waymo vehicle burned in the background, would be “good for Trump” in campaign ads.
Later in the podcast, Morales voiced his support for Maher’s use of the phrase “woke supremacist.” He said it describes people who present themselves as tolerant but are quick to “cancel” others over political disagreements.
“They’re the most intolerant sometimes,” Morales said. “They want to cancel people at the drop of a hat.”
Morales noted that he still identifies as a liberal but believes in reforming the status quo “for the better.”
Maher’s recent comments reflect his ongoing frustration with the direction of the Democratic Party, even as he continues to support some of its candidates in elections.
