Taylor Swift has revealed the “weird and silly” ritual she still shares with longtime best friend Abigail Anderson. The routine has survived since their teenage years, leaving their husbands, including Travis Kelce, to accept the playful behavior, as reported by US Magazine.
Swift, 36, discussed the friendship on Sunday, November 1, during a special Q&A following a New York City screening of Toy Story 5. She appeared alongside the animated film’s director, Andrew Stanton.
The Grammy winner provided the movie’s soundtrack with “I Knew It, I Knew You.” The song reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
During the conversation, Swift explained how her relationship with Anderson helped her connect with the friendship depicted in the film. The story involves 8-year-old Bonnie, voiced by Scarlett Spears, and new character Blaze, voiced by Mykal-Michelle Harris.
Bonnie is the current owner of Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and their companions. Swift said the connection between Bonnie and Blaze reminded her of finding a friend who matched her particular personality.
“I’d like to pile on to what Andrew was saying about finding someone who is the same genre of weird and silly as you are and just why Bonnie and Blaze’s story resonated with me so much,” she said.
Swift then looked back at moving to Nashville at age 14 and facing the uncertainty of being the new student. While she considered which classmates might become her friends, Anderson immediately stood out.
“When I moved to Nashville when I was 14, you’re the new kid in school [and] you’re like, ‘Who should I be friends with? These girls are cool. These girls are cool. These are nice girls.’ But there was one girl named Abigail — she even has curly hair like Blaze — and the two of us, all we wanted to do was talk in Napoleon Dynamite voices.”
That shared fondness for Napoleon Dynamite voices did not disappear as Swift and Anderson grew older. According to the “Patient Zero” singer, the pair still slips into the unusual routine during their conversations.
Swift said that “we still do this, and it’s something our husbands have to put up with.” She then demonstrated the kind of exchange the friends continue to have.
“It’s just, ‘What are you doing today?’ ‘I don’t know. What are you doing? Are you playing with your cute kid?’” she shared. “‘Yeah, I am. What’s the problem with that?’”
For Swift, that enduring silliness gave the Toy Story 5 friendship an especially personal impact. She connected the film’s story to the experience of being completely understood by another person.
“When you find that person that completely sees you for the strange little genre that is you at your purest, that hit me so hard watching the film.”

Swift married Kansas City Chiefs tight end Kelce, 37, on July 3. Their lavish wedding took place at New York City’s Madison Square Garden and was officiated by Adam Sandler.
Anderson married Charles “Charlie” Berard in September 2022. The couple welcomed their son, Bennett, in August 2024, a detail that also surfaced in Swift’s playful imitation of their conversations.
Kelce later spoke warmly about his wedding while addressing reporters in August. “[The] wedding was the best night of my life. I appreciate everybody who came out and celebrated and had fun with us,” he said.
He described the celebration as a crazy night filled with celebration. Kelce also explained that getting married at Madison Square Garden allowed him to fulfill a childhood dream connected to the venue.
“MSG, man, I always told myself I’d go for a playoff game when the [New York] Knicks were rocking, and my wife went when I was stuck in minicamp,” he added. “I didn’t get the opportunity to go then, so it’s kind of cool to get to live out my childhood dream of being in that venue, the mecca of all sports venues, being able to get married in there.”
