The personal disclosure arrives as she prepares to release her new album, “The Hard Truth,” on Oct. 2.

The album turns toward subjects that have long carried emotional weight for Wynonna, including her complicated bond with Naomi Judd, family secrets, anger and forgiveness.

In discussing the project, Wynonna made clear that its candor has sometimes left her questioning the decision to reveal so much.

“I feel like this is the most honest and vulnerable I’ve ever been,” she told the outlet about writing “The Hard Truth.”

“It’s there for everyone to hear. So there are some days I think, ‘Oh my God, what have I done?’ And then other days I think, ‘There comes a point in your life when you are ready to tell your testimony.’”

Wynonna wrote the album with her husband, Cactus Moser, a music producer who encouraged her to embrace vulnerability. Moser told the outlet, “I knew it was going to be cathartic.”

Long before the album, Wynonna and Naomi became famous as the mother and daughter duo The Judds.

Their close harmonies and music helped define country music during the 1980s.

Between 1984 and 1991, The Judds scored 20 Top 10 country hits, including 14 No. 1 singles. They also won five Grammy Awards, nine CMA Awards, and seven ACM Awards.

Yet the success existed alongside a relationship that Wynonna described as both loving and turbulent.

“There was a tremendous amount of love there; a lot of drama but a lot of love as well. It was definitely a paradox,” she said.

Wynonna previously told Fox News Digital that the love of music she shared with Naomi helped them “bypass the bullcrap” and build a close relationship.

That musical connection did not erase the private struggles that shaped their family life.

Naomi struggled with severe depression for years before her death by suicide in April 2022 at age 76.

Wynonna said her mother’s illness and the burden of protecting a family secret left her devastated.

“My mother had an illness, she had a disease. I kept the secret, and I was devastated by that,” Wynonna explained.

Wynonna rejected the idea that Naomi’s death was what allowed her to create such a personal album.

She said she would have insisted on telling her story even if her mother were still alive.

“I think I would’ve been more determined,” she explained. “It’s my story, and it’s my feelings.”

At the same time, Wynonna acknowledged that Naomi likely would have found some of the album’s revelations painful.

The honesty central to the project could have been difficult for her mother to hear.

“I think it would be very painful for her. Very painful. But I also know that she knows me, that I’m so honest and so up-front.”

The album places Wynonna’s perspective and emotions at the center, even when doing so creates discomfort.

Her comments about Ashley also reveal that the family is navigating another period of distance while each sister follows her own path.

For Wynonna, “The Hard Truth” represents a public reckoning with love, turmoil, and secrets that remained behind the family’s success.

Its Oct. 2 release will bring those deeply personal reflections to listeners after she chose to tell what she regards as her own testimony.
