Maine Democratic Senate nominee Troy Jackson delivered a damaging debate moment Thursday night when he snapped at Republican Sen. Susan Collins after an audience member interrupted her. The outburst arrived during the final debate of a pivotal Senate contest.
The exchange unfolded at Husson University’s Gracie Theatre in Bangor, where Jackson and Collins discussed several issues. Those topics included the national debt and Collins’ views about President Trump’s cabinet selections.
An audience member interrupted Collins and shouted that AI data centers were destroying the climate. Collins responded by connecting the protester to her opponent, apparently prompting Jackson to lose his cool.
“So this is obviously one of Troy's supporters,” Collins says.

“Oh, shut up,” Jackson snaps back. “I don't even know that kid.”
“Oh, right,” Collins says.

The debate then continued, with Collins refusing to be rattled by Jackson’s remark. After nearly 30 years in the Senate, she did not wilt when her Democratic opponent lashed out at her from the stage.
The moment was especially brutal for Jackson because allegations surrounding his behavior toward women had already followed his campaign. His temper during his years in the Maine state Senate reportedly became a subject of concern among Democratic lawmakers.

Jackson served in the state Senate for 14 years and left office in 2024. During the final six years of his tenure, he presided over the chamber as president of the Maine state Senate.
The Washington Post reported in July that Jackson’s temper became enough of a concern for Democratic lawmakers that the matter was raised with the governor. His temperament was reportedly treated as a problem within his own party’s ranks.
One alleged episode involved a water bottle being thrown at a female lawmaker who disagreed with Jackson about an issue facing a vote. The account added to questions about how he responded when women challenged him politically.
Important to remember that Troy Jackson has a history of being aggressive and even violent with women.

Jackson also reportedly yelled at another lawmaker, who later wrote on social media that straight men were “too emotional” to participate in politics. In another incident, he cursed and shouted during a meeting with the speaker of Maine’s state House.
That encounter ended when the speaker ordered Jackson out of her office. Taken together, the reported incidents portrayed his temper as a recurring feature of his leadership rather than a single isolated confrontation.
The story also cited a disturbing 1988 incident involving Jackson and his girlfriend, with whom he remains. Jackson allegedly pushed her around during a jealous rage after he admittedly punched another man.
Against that background, Jackson’s debate response to Collins handed critics a fresh example at an especially bad moment. His choice to tell a female senator to shut up was caught during the final debate rather than in some private meeting away from voters.
Collins had merely suggested that the disruptive audience member supported Jackson. Instead of calmly denying any connection, Jackson barked at her before insisting that he did not know the protester.
So Troy Jackson married his cousin and has angry outbursts at women?

The exchange is likely to receive attention from Republican campaign organizations, including the National Republican Senatorial Committee and the Senate Leadership Fund. The clip could appear in campaign advertising because it reinforces criticism of Jackson’s interactions with women.
Jackson’s difficulties come as he has been unable to pull away from Collins in polling. That leaves Democrats with another headache during the closing stretch of a race carrying major consequences for control of Congress.
The 2026 midterm elections will determine whether Republicans retain control of both chambers and whether President Trump’s America First agenda has congressional support. Jackson’s latest eruption gave Republicans a sharp and highly shareable closing argument against the Democratic nominee.
For Jackson, the timing could hardly have been worse. A candidate already facing questions about his temperament managed to create another damaging moment before the debate audience, his opponent, and the cameras at a pivotal stage of the campaign.
