A man was savagely mauled to death after entering a tiger enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park in England on Saturday afternoon. The victim had not been publicly identified following the deadly attack.

The man entered the tiger’s enclosure and was quickly attacked by a massive Siberian tiger. It remained unclear how he managed to get inside the area before the animal set upon him.

Terrifying footage captured the tiger biting and clawing at the man’s back while he sat on the grass. The victim appeared to try to stop the attack as the animal continued assaulting him.

“No! No! No!” the man shouted after the first bites. He held up his index finger and appeared to attempt to reprimand the tiger during the horrifying encounter.

Bystanders could be heard yelling in the background as the attack unfolded. Witnesses repeatedly made frantic pleas of “no” while watching the animal attack the man inside the enclosure.

South Yorkshire Police received reports of a man inside the tiger enclosure at 1:35 p.m. local time. Police and other emergency personnel then rushed to Yorkshire Wildlife Park.

“The tiger subsequently attacked the man, resulting in serious injury,” the South Yorkshire Police said in a statement released after the incident. Medical personnel attempted to help the victim at the scene.

“Emergency services attended, and sadly, despite the best efforts of medical personnel, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.” Police did not release the man’s identity in the information provided.

The tiger was not injured during the incident and remained inside its enclosure. Police said the animal was “uninjured and remained in the enclosure following the incident” and assured the public that there was no ongoing risk.

Yorkshire Wildlife Park closed after the fatal attack and announced that it would remain closed the following day. The closure covered the remainder of the weekend after the shocking incident at the tiger exhibit.

“We can confirm that a serious incident has occurred today at the tiger enclosure,” the park said in its own statement. The park added, “The park is now closed and will remain closed tomorrow.”

The wildlife park’s “Land of the Tiger’s” exhibit is surrounded by a long visitor walkway. From that walkway, visitors can safely look down into the exhibit and view the endangered species of big cat.

Witnesses said a black screen was placed around the enclosure after the mauling, according to local outlet The Star. The screen went up following the deadly encounter and the arrival of emergency personnel.

In addition to its tiger exhibit, Yorkshire Wildlife Park features several other large and potentially dangerous animals. Those animals include a polar bear, lions, cheetahs, leopards, and black rhinos.

Police said specialist officers were supporting the victim’s family after his death. It was not clear from the available information whether any members of his family were at the wildlife park when the attack occurred.

“Our thoughts are with them at this distressing time,” police said. The statement came as authorities confirmed the man had died at the scene despite the efforts of medical personnel.

The incident left the park closed and the tiger inside the enclosure, with police maintaining that there was no threat to the wider public. How the victim entered the enclosure remained unanswered following the fatal attack.
