  • A Fox News Digital investigation identified 50 organizations connected to France’s student protests and their international amplification.
  • The network included student groups, labor unions, communist organizations, political parties, Muslim activists and Palestinian advocacy groups.
  • BreakThrough News portrayed the demonstrations as a historic revolt and distributed dramatic protest footage to international audiences.
  • Neville Roy Singham has financed BreakThrough News and other communist and far left organizations linked to the activist ecosystem.

When young adults stormed France's Bastille on Thursday, BreakThrough News alerted followers: "French students flood Bastille Square in Paris." Earlier that week, the outlet cast the unrest as a "historic strike against austerity," with support from unions and progressive forces.

A Fox News Digital investigation found that a transnational network of communist and socialist organizations is using France's student protests to promote a broader ideological agenda. The network amplifies unrest, divisions and images of chaos through tactics previously deployed in the United States.

The investigation identified 50 organizations involved in the French protest movement or its wider network of supporters and international amplifiers. They included 15 student or youth organizations, several communist youth movements and a Muslim student association.

The remaining 35 adult organizations included a dozen labor unions, eight communist or socialist groups, five civil rights or human rights organizations and four political parties. Other participants represented parental advocacy, environmental activism, economic justice, international media, diaspora organizing and Palestinian advocacy.

BreakThrough News is based in New York City and described as a pro communist propaganda outlet. It is funded by Neville Roy Singham, an American-born, Shanghai-based communist technology tycoon who has financed communist and far-left organizations in the United States.

Mike Gonzalez, a senior fellow at the Heritage Foundation, compared the French network with disruptive activism in America. "What we're seeing here is the same Red-Green ecosystem that disrupts infrastructure chokeholds in our country such as the Brooklyn Bridge, college campuses and congressional hearings," Gonzalez told Fox News Digital.

Gonzalez also pointed directly to Singham's financing, saying, "And in the case of BreakThrough News, the same sugar daddy — Neville Roy Singham." He argued that the communist Red and Islamist Greens share opposition to the Judeo-Christian, capitalist and free West.

Since late September, politicians from La France Insoumise were seen working with students organizing blockades in Seine-Saint-Denis. French journalist Nora Bussigny wrote that many party officials had worked to co-opt the protests while discrediting police and legitimizing political violence.

A broad collection of far-left groups later called for tens of thousands of secondary school students and supporters to march through Paris on Oct. 6. Student organizations helping mobilize included Union Syndicale Lycéenne, Union Étudiante, Fédération des Associations Générales Étudiantes and Union Nationale des Étudiants de France.

Labor organizations expanded the campaign beyond the teenagers who first entered the streets. The Confédération nationale du travail declared, "The demands of high school students are also ours. They are right to revolt."

Other participating labor groups included the Confédération générale du travail, Force Ouvrière, and Union nationale des syndicats autonomes. Several education unions also called for strikes and demonstrations supporting the high school movement.

The ideological character of the demonstrations was visible in Paris, where activists carried communist flags and Palestinian symbols. A red banner displayed messages opposing imperialist wars and calling for class war alongside a yellow hammer and sickle.

Fabien Roussel, national secretary of the French Communist Party, appeared with protesters and Communist officials. The party separately promoted a campaign demanding an end to arms supplies to Israel, while other revolutionary left groups encouraged solidarity between high school and university activists.

Étudiants Musulmans de France urged followers to protest for the right of young people to study with dignity. Members of Urgence Palestine marched with Palestinian flags, while La France Insoumise lawmaker Louis Boyard displayed one alongside students blocking Paris-Est-Créteil University.

BreakThrough News also published a video of Saint-Denis Mayor Bally Bagayoko during a confrontation between students and police. The outlet described Bagayoko as protecting students from attacking police, and the video received about 346,000 likes in one day.

Accounts liking the video included Twitch influencer Hasan Piker, BreakThrough News editor Zoe Alexandra, and chapters of the Party for Socialism and Liberation and Jewish Voice for Peace. Piker previously traveled to Cuba with a far-left caravan and was photographed with Singham's wife, CodePink cofounder Jodie Evans.

International amplification extended to the Communist Youth of Greece, teleSUR and Indian Alliance Paris. Indian Alliance Paris previously co-sponsored a 2023 event at the People's Forum Inc., which Singham launched in 2017 with $22.44 million in funding.

After the Bastille protest, BreakThrough News posted clips from the United States, Spain, India, France, Brazil, Belgium, Chile, and Germany. The montage showed young people waving communist flags, confronting police, and filling streets under the declaration: "YOUTH RISE UP AROUND THE WORLD."
