WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • Rep. Glenn Grothman says Democrats lack credibility on gasoline prices because their energy policies restricted domestic production under Biden.
  • AAA lists the current national gasoline average at $4.37 per gallon, while prices reached $5.016 under Biden in June 2022.
  • Grothman warned that gasoline prices could remain high for 15 years without more domestic production and refining capacity.
  • He urged Republicans to remind voters that inflation peaked at 9.1% in June 2022 and promote Trump administration economic achievements.

Democrats are trying to make gasoline prices an election issue, but Wisconsin Republican Rep. Glenn Grothman says their record under former President Joe Biden leaves them with little credibility. He argues that Democratic energy restrictions and federal spending helped create the very economic pain they now hope to exploit.

Grothman urged voters to remember the economic conditions under Biden before heading to the polls. He said Democratic policies limiting domestic energy production resulted in higher costs for Americans filling their tanks.

During an interview this week on the “Just the News, No Noise” TV program, Grothman tied high gasoline prices to limited supply. He argued that increasing available energy would bring down costs.

“The reason we have high gas prices is we have a shortage of supply, which always results in the higher cost,” Grothman said.

The Wisconsin congressman criticized Democrats for opposing oil drilling in Alaska, fracking in North Dakota and construction of the Keystone XL pipeline. Those positions, he said, hampered domestic production during the Biden administration and helped drive up prices at the pump.

“The Democrat Party is the party that didn't want to drill in Alaska, they didn't want to do any fracking in North Dakota, they didn't want to build the Keystone Pipeline,” Grothman said. “And now you expect these people to lower the price of gas?”

Grothman pointed to California as a warning about the consequences of Democratic energy policies. He said gasoline there was selling for $6.40 per gallon, compared with $4.05 per gallon in other areas he referenced.

The national average is currently $4.37 per gallon, according to AAA. Gasoline prices reached $5.016 per gallon under Biden in June 2022, according to the organization.

Grothman warned that expensive gasoline could remain a burden for years unless the United States expands domestic energy production and adds refining capacity. He rejected the idea that the problem would necessarily disappear after the Iran war ends.

“You're going to have high gas prices not for the next two months until the [Iran] war is over. You're going to have high gas prices for the next 15 years if we don't start building some refineries around here,” he said.

Grothman argued that Republicans offer voters a path back toward gasoline costing $2.10 per gallon. His prescription included additional refineries and more oil production from the sea, North Dakota and Alaska.

“If you want to see the day of $2.10 a gallon again, you better vote Republican for more refineries and more oil coming out of the sea and more oil coming out of North Dakota and more oil coming out of Alaska,” Grothman added.

The discussion also turned to inflation, with Grothman blaming the record high level under Biden on increased federal spending. He accused Democrats of advancing policies that could once again push consumer prices higher.

“The reason we had high inflation is high spending, which is what the Democrats are usually known for,” Grothman said. He noted that inflation peaked at 9.1% in June 2022, according to the Consumer Price Index.

Grothman compared that inflation with levels seen during the 1970s or early 1980s. He also warned that continued spending would produce more of the same economic trouble.

“It was the highest since like the 1970s or early 1980s on inflation, and you're going to get more of that,” Grothman said. “And what happens when you have spending, spending, spending? You have inflation, inflation, inflation.”

Asked how Republicans could strengthen their standing with voters during the final three weeks before the election, Grothman urged the party to promote the work of President Donald Trump and the Republican controlled Congress. He cited trade agreements with China, lower prescription drug costs and tax provisions involving tips, overtime pay and car loan interest.

Grothman said those tax changes were intended to help working Americans rather than wealthy taxpayers. He also credited Trump and congressional Republicans with improving trade relations and reducing the trade deficit with China.

“You're not aiming for some big billionaire when you cut the tax on tips or when you put a deduction for interest on car loans,” Grothman said. “Those are all for the average guy.”

Grothman’s message to Republicans was direct: counter Democratic criticism by emphasizing their economic record and reminding voters about inflation during the Biden administration. For Democrats hoping to campaign against gasoline prices, that Biden era record remains an inconvenient collision.
