Michigan Democrat Sen. Elissa Slotkin is raising eyebrows with a warning that the Trump administration could use a national security incident to affect the 2026 midterm elections. The former CIA analyst offered the theory while discussing the November vote in Michigan.

The latest remarks arrived days after Slotkin sparked anger on the right by suggesting Democrats should target people connected to President Trump. Her stated aim was to discourage young people from working for the president.

After that backlash, Slotkin portrayed herself as the victim of the controversy. Conservative activist Mike Davis, whom Slotkin singled out, responded to her comments the following day.

Slotkin then turned her attention to the midterms during a Tuesday conversation with the Michigan Black Business Alliance. The discussion took place at Wayne State University’s Rosa Café.

According to Slotkin, the Trump administration is “trying to change the outcome of the November vote.” She pointed to disputes involving Michigan voter rolls, voting by mail, and post office rules.

“They’ve sued for Michigan’s voter rolls; they’ve tried to taint mail-in voting, saying it’s bad, it’s not to be used,” Slotkin said. Her remarks presented those actions as part of an effort involving the November election.

“They couldn’t do that, so they tried to change post office rules of who is allowed to use a mail-in vote,” she added. Slotkin then moved from concerns about voting procedures to a potential national security scenario near Election Day.

“The thing I’m watching very closely as a national security person, cause it’s a standard tactic of authoritarians abroad, is like right in the last two weeks of the election, they somehow come up with a national security incident, something that only they can protect us from,” Slotkin said.

Her theory did not stop with the possible announcement of an incident. Slotkin also described federal personnel and military forces appearing at a polling location.

“And they’ll need to send out federal law enforcement, ICE, the uniformed military, to a polling place,” she noted. Slotkin did not identify a specific incident already underway, instead describing a scenario she said she was monitoring.

“So, I’m watching that very, very closely,” she said. The senator portrayed the possibility as serious enough to warrant advance planning through an exercise commonly used to examine scenarios.

“As a senator, I felt so strongly about this that I helped organize what’s called a TTX, a table-top exercise” used by the military to game out specific scenarios.

The progression has been striking. Slotkin first faced criticism over comments about pursuing Trump’s people, then shifted into warnings that the administration might produce a national security event in the closing weeks before the midterms.

She framed that potential event as something authorities could use to justify deploying federal law enforcement, ICE, or uniformed military personnel to a polling place. She also linked her warning to what she called tactics used by authoritarians abroad.

The remarks amount to a sweeping theory about Trump, national security, federal power, and election administration. For a senator already facing criticism over her previous comments, the performance only added another layer to the controversy.

Slotkin says she is watching the situation “very, very closely,” but her warning remains about an event she believes could happen. That leaves her pushing a dramatic election scenario before the alleged national security incident even exists.

The obvious political question is whether Slotkin is laying groundwork for Democrats to blame Trump if the party loses the midterms. Whatever her purpose, she has now placed that theory into public discussion months before the November vote.

Blaming Trump would certainly be a familiar political explanation from Democrats. Slotkin, however, has gone further by describing a specific scenario involving a national security incident, federal officers, ICE, uniformed military personnel, and a polling place.
