  • Charles Barkley criticized progressive proposals involving ICE, prisons, policing and voter identification during an interview with Chris Cuomo.
  • Barkley called ideas involving “no cops” among “the stupidest” things he had heard while also demanding better performance from ICE.
  • Pew Research Center found 83% supported government issued photo identification for voting in August 2025.
  • Barkley remains an independent who has frequently voted Democratic and has criticized politicians from both parties.

Charles Barkley has never shown much interest in filtering his opinions, and his latest political comments were no exception. The NBA legend sharply criticized several progressive proposals associated with figures on the Democratic left.

During an interview with Chris Cuomo reported by OutKick, Barkley addressed calls to abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement, eliminate prisons, reduce policing and oppose voter identification requirements. His assessment of those positions was characteristically blunt.

“Some of these people out here talking about no ICE, no prison,” Barkley told Cuomo, before saying proposals involving “no cops” were among “the stupidest” things he had heard.

Barkley described himself as an independent who has voted Democratic most of the time. His criticism therefore did not amount to a simple endorsement of Republicans or a rejection of everyone in the Democratic Party.

The former basketball star has criticized politicians from both parties over the years. His political identity has consistently resisted an easy partisan label, even when his opinions place him at odds with people he has previously supported.

Barkley also made clear that he was not defending every aspect of current immigration enforcement. “ICE has to do a much better job,” he said.

At the same time, Barkley argued that the country cannot simply permit uncontrolled border crossings. He said immigrants are some of the hardest working people in the country, while maintaining that criminals still need to be removed.

His frustration extended to opposition against requiring identification at the polls. “You need to have ID when you go vote,” Barkley told Cuomo.

One Democratic candidate has embraced at least part of the agenda Barkley criticized. Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed has openly called for abolishing ICE, according to the source.

El-Sayed’s campaign said in January that the agency was “irredeemable.” The campaign also confirmed that he has supported abolishing ICE since 2018.

That position does not represent every Democrat, including El-Sayed’s rivals in the Democratic primary. His own campaign emphasized that Haley Stevens and Mallory McMorrow did not support eliminating ICE.

Claims about El-Sayed’s positions on policing and prisons are also more complicated than a single political slogan suggests. PolitiFact examined those claims in September and found that his views had changed in key respects.

According to PolitiFact, El-Sayed supported redirecting police funding in 2020 and favored reducing incarceration. He currently supports funding for police recruitment, retention and retirement.

PolitiFact rated the claim that El-Sayed presently supports “defunding the police and emptying prisons” as Mostly False. That finding leaves a more mixed record than the broadest version of the accusation would suggest.

Barkley’s position on voter identification, however, aligns with a large majority of Americans surveyed by Pew Research Center. In its August 2025 survey, 83% supported requiring voters to present government issued photo identification.

Support included 95% of Republicans and 71% of Democrats and independents who lean Democratic. Those figures place voter identification requirements well outside the political fringe, regardless of reactions to Barkley’s forceful delivery.

His latest remarks also fit a political pattern that stretches back years. In 2007, Barkley told CNN he was an independent while criticizing Republicans and Democrats alike.

One year later, Barkley strongly supported Barack Obama. Even then, he continued describing himself as an independent and said he intended to vote Democratic.

Criticizing progressive Democrats does not suddenly place Barkley inside the Republican camp. Instead, the comments continue his established habit of publicly challenging political ideas he opposes, including those advanced by members of a party he has often supported.

The tone may have been scorching, but Barkley’s message was not confined to a single party label. He rejected specific progressive proposals while also demanding better performance from ICE and praising immigrants as exceptionally hardworking members of the country.
