- The gala raised more than $1 million, but its charitable accomplishments were overshadowed by the political uproar.
Chuck Lorre accepted Project Angel Food’s highest honor at a Los Angeles gala meant to celebrate his support for the charity.
What followed was a deeply personal political broadside aimed at President Donald Trump, first lady Melania Trump and several other public figures.
The “Big Bang Theory” creator received the organization’s Founders Angel Award on September 26. Project Angel Food said its annual Angel Awards gala took place at the Chuck Lorre Family Foundation Kitchen & Campus in Los Angeles.
According to Fox News, Lorre repeatedly steered his acceptance speech into politics.

His comments went considerably beyond routine Hollywood criticism as he mocked Trump, attacked Melania and criticized figures from both major political parties.
Lorre began by acknowledging that he would have preferred to focus on Project Angel Food and the people behind its work.
“I’d love to express my gratitude to all the people who’ve devoted their lives to making Project Angel Food an oasis for those in need. That would be my preference,” Lorre said.
Instead, Lorre made a joke about waking up every morning, turning on CNN and checking whether Trump had suffered a heart attack.

He later directed his attention toward Melania while encouraging people attending the event to donate.
After praising former first lady Michelle Obama, Lorre described Melania as a “surgically enhanced, cold-hearted Yugoslavian escort who clearly hates her husband,” according to Fox News. The personal nature of the insult quickly helped push attention away from the charity being honored.
Lorre did not limit his criticism to Republicans. He urged the Democratic National Committee to abandon what he called the “suicidal insanity of the far-left woke culture,” then attacked Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. over vaccines.

Near the end of the speech, Lorre called Trump a “Russian asset.” Fox News also reported that he made an unsubstantiated allegation involving Jeffrey Epstein while delivering his own version of the Serenity Prayer.
The White House responded with a personal attack of its own.
In a statement provided to Fox News Digital, White House spokesperson Davis Ingle blasted the television producer in language every bit as pointed as Lorre’s remarks.
“Chuck Lorre should immediately seek psychiatric help to treat his severe case of Trump Derangement Syndrome that has completely rotted his peanut-sized brain,” Ingle said.
The statement showed how quickly the dispute had become a bitter exchange of insults.
Film critic Christian Toto also condemned Lorre’s comments during an interview with Fox News Digital.
His criticism focused particularly on the decision to target a first lady who was not elected to office.
“Generally speaking, we don’t attack first ladies. It’s just sort of an unspoken rule,” Toto said. “They weren’t elected. They’re just supporting their husbands.”

Toto argued that calling Melania an escort was inaccurate and needlessly cruel.
He also questioned whether Hollywood would respond similarly if a conservative television producer delivered comparable remarks about Michelle Obama.
“There are double standards that exist in Hollywood,” Toto said. “Targets you can hit, targets you can’t hit.”
Toto’s objections extended beyond Lorre’s choice of target. He questioned why celebrities bring partisan politics into charity events and described that practice as “very indulgent,” according to Fox News.
The political uproar overshadowed the evening’s substantial fundraising result.
Project Angel Food reported that the gala raised more than $1 million for an organization that prepares and delivers more than 1.5 million medically tailored meals every year.
Those meals go to people living with illnesses that threaten their lives.
Yet the attention surrounding the gala shifted from that work and its fundraising success to another ugly clash between Hollywood and politics, fueled by Lorre’s speech and the White House’s furious response.
