Sen. Jim Banks said he believes ideological divisions within the Democratic Party are becoming increasingly visible, pointing to a new pledge circulated by moderate House Democrats as evidence of growing concern over the influence of socialist policies within the party.

Speaking during a recent interview, Banks described what he said was an effort by more centrist Democrats in the House of Representatives to distinguish themselves from the party's progressive wing.

"More moderate-leaning Democrats came out with a with a new pledge that they circulated among their colleagues in the House, and the pledge was this: We are Democrats, we support capitalism, we do not support socialism."

Banks said he was surprised by the need for such a declaration.

"That Scott, I kid you not, that was their pledge."

He argued that the pledge reflects broader ideological disagreements within the Democratic Party.

"I mean that it is unbelievable."

According to Banks, he believes the Democratic Socialists of America and other left-wing factions have gained significant influence over the party's direction.

"But this is this socialist infection of the Democrat Party by the DSA wing, the Communist wing of the Democrat Party, they have they have taken over."

Banks contended that the divide between moderate Democrats and the party's progressive wing will continue to shape national politics over the coming election cycles.

He predicted that those differences could become especially prominent during the 2028 presidential campaign.

"And you're right. When AOC is leading the Democrats in the 2028 presidential race against JD Vance, lead leading it on our side, it's going to be an epic battle between two totally fundamentally different worldviews about what America is-is America good or not-and where America is going."

Banks argued that such a contest would represent more than a traditional political campaign, saying it would center on competing visions for the country's future.

According to Banks, the debate would focus on fundamental questions about America's identity, values and direction rather than simply disagreements over individual policy proposals.

He suggested that voters would be presented with sharply contrasting philosophies about the role of government, the economy and the nation's future.

Banks also said he believes those ideological differences are already apparent during the current election cycle.

"And that's going to be on full display in 2028."

He added that, in his view, the same themes are emerging in this year's congressional campaigns.

"But it's on full display in this midterm election in 2026 as well."

Throughout his remarks, Banks argued that the Democratic Party is experiencing an internal struggle between members who identify with traditional Democratic positions and those aligned with more progressive or socialist viewpoints.

He said the reported pledge supporting capitalism demonstrates that some Democratic lawmakers believe it is necessary to publicly distance themselves from socialism.

Banks maintained that those divisions will continue to influence elections beyond 2026 and predicted they will become an even more significant issue if the presidential race unfolds as he anticipates.

He said voters will ultimately decide between what he described as two fundamentally different visions for the future of the United States.
