A routine beach day turned into a reptile spectacle when families spotted a man carrying a massive snake along the crowded Coney Island boardwalk.

Children and other curious visitors gathered nearby as the animal was displayed in one of New York City's busiest recreation areas, as reported by Fox Weather.

Authorities said the man was showing off an illegal Burmese python near Riegelmann Boardwalk earlier this summer.

The bizarre scene quickly drew attention, because apparently a giant constrictor was not enough reason for some bystanders to keep their distance.

An officer with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation noticed the growing crowd surrounding the handler.

Officials said small children were among those standing around the man as he controlled the enormous python.

The man also had a smaller ball python wrapped around his neck, adding another reptile to the public display.

The combination created an obvious safety concern in a place packed with families, tourists, joggers, vendors, and beach visitors.

When questioned by the environmental conservation officer, the man acknowledged that the larger animal belonged to him.

He also confirmed that it was a Burmese python, a species New York officials classify as dangerous and illegal to possess.

That admission made the enforcement decision fairly straightforward. Authorities ticketed the man for illegal possession, confiscated the python, and removed it from the boardwalk before the spectacle could become something far more serious.

The snake was transferred to the Nassau County SPCA following the seizure. Officers were photographed holding the huge python, providing a striking look at the size of the animal that had been carried through the public area.

Burmese pythons are native to Southeast Asia and rank among the largest snakes in the world.

Their strength and size make them potentially hazardous, particularly when handled around people who have no training or understanding of the risks involved.

New York environmental officials also warned about the ecological consequences if such an animal escapes or is deliberately released.

Burmese pythons introduced into an unsuitable environment can prey on native wildlife and disrupt existing animal populations.

South Florida has already provided a grim lesson in what happens when the species becomes established.

Burmese pythons have spread through the Everglades, where they are considered a severely damaging invasive species and have devastated native wildlife.

Florida authorities have devoted substantial resources to locating and removing the snakes from public lands.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has even trained dogs to detect pythons as officials work to contain a problem created by irresponsible ownership and release.

The Coney Island seizure was not the first time officials encountered an illegal animal being used on the famous boardwalk.

In August 2023, authorities confiscated a wallaby from a man who was reportedly charging people to pose for photographs with it.

That earlier incident suggested an ongoing temptation to turn exotic animals into quick cash attractions.

It also demonstrated why enforcement is necessary, since crowded public spaces are not private zoos and random handlers are not a substitute for trained professionals.

Snake encounters have also generated attention elsewhere in the country.

Video from Thousand Oaks, California, recently showed two large rattlesnakes twisting around each other near a storm drain in what looked like an aggressive reptile tango.

Wild snakes appearing in their natural range are one matter, but carrying a prohibited python through a packed New York boardwalk is something else entirely.

Families expecting sand, surf, and perhaps an overpriced snack instead found themselves standing feet away from a massive constrictor.

The officer's intervention ended the display without any reported injuries, while the owner walked away with a ticket and without his python.

It was a sensible conclusion to an incident that could have produced a much uglier headline had the snake escaped his control.
