Martha Stewart offered a blunt assessment of Meghan Markle’s attempt to move into cooking and homemaking television after working as an actress and becoming a princess. The lifestyle expert made clear that she did not see an obvious path connecting those different roles, as reported by Page Six.

Stewart recently encountered the Duchess of Sussex at a dinner party in California. However, the cookbook author, 85, said their conversation at the gathering was extremely limited.

“I had dinner with Meghan Markle the other night. We were both guests at a dinner party in California. And she had just gotten back from the palace,” the “Martha Stewart Show” alum told People.

Stewart was referring to Markle’s recent trip to the UK with her husband, Prince Harry, and their two children. Although both women attended the same gathering, Stewart said she only exchanged a few words with the duchess.

“I didn’t talk to her really more than to say a couple words, but I know she was talking about it,” Stewart added. She did not provide further details about their brief interaction.

The conversation then turned to Markle entering the lifestyle and cooking field with her Netflix program, “With Love, Meghan.”

Stewart was asked directly for her opinion about Markle “stepping into [her] space” through the cooking show.

Stewart responded by focusing on the unusual series of roles Markle has occupied. Markle, 45, first became known as an actress before becoming the Duchess of Sussex and later launching her homemaking program.

“If you’re an actress, it’s hard to then transition to a princess and then from a princess into a homemaking guru on a television show,” Stewart shared.

Her response suggested that the progression did not make sense to her.

“It doesn’t sort of follow. So go from there,” Stewart added, leaving her sharp assessment there rather than offering a more detailed evaluation of Markle’s work.

Markle and the Duke of Sussex, 41, quit the royal family in 2020 before moving to the United States. Since that departure, the couple has become involved in various projects outside royal life.

Last April, the former “Suits” actress launched As Ever, a brand focused on lifestyle, cooking and hosting.

That debut arrived just weeks after her lifestyle series, “With Love, Meghan,” premiered on Netflix.

Stewart was among several people who appeared to take a dig at Markle’s new endeavors.

Her latest comments also followed an earlier assessment in which she emphasized the importance of knowledge and authenticity when entering the lifestyle field.

In July 2025, the “Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party” alum said she hoped the mom of two “knows what she’s talking about.”

Stewart then explained the standards that she personally considers essential when discussing a chosen subject.

“Authenticity, to me, is everything, and to be authentic and knowledgeable about your subject matter is extremely important,” Stewart told Yahoo Lifestyle at the time.

The comment placed particular emphasis on both credibility and expertise.

Despite that pointed warning, Stewart claimed she did not “mind” the possibility of having successors in her field. She also wished all of those potential successors “good luck,” even as her comments about Markle’s transition remained distinctly skeptical.

Her latest verdict centered less on the existence of another cooking and lifestyle show than on Markle’s path toward presenting one. For Stewart, the move from actress to princess and then to a television homemaking guru simply did not appear to follow naturally.
