Comedian Bill Maher argued that the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) is increasingly shaping the direction of the Democratic Party, contending that many of its leaders and candidates openly embrace ideas rooted in communism rather than traditional Democratic politics.

Maher made the remarks while explaining why he believes his political support is no longer guaranteed for Democratic candidates.

"And finally, new rule: Donald Trump has told 1 trillion lies, but when he says the Democratic Socialists of America are actually communists, that's not one of them," Maher said. "And it's not hard to prove it just by quoting the DSA and their candidates."

Maher said he takes no pleasure in making the argument.

"It gives me no pleasure to have to do this."

He recalled telling Vice President J.D. Vance before leaving for vacation that his vote was no longer automatic.

"Right before we left, Vice President J.D. Vance was on the show, and I told him that if the Democratic Party keeps going in the direction of the DSA, my vote was in play."

Maher said some interpreted that remark as an endorsement of Republicans.

"And all I heard all vacation was, 'Oh my God, you're a Republican now!'"

He rejected that characterization.

"No, that's not what I said. I said in play."

Maher said his concern stems from what he sees as an increasing number of Democratic candidates embracing far-left ideas.

"Not a week goes by where I don't read about some newly chosen, exciting new face in the Democratic Party, and then when that face opens its mouth, the Communist Manifesto, or some other crazy shit, comes out."

He pointed to the DSA platform as one example.

"The DSA platform says, 'Your work, you work as much as you are able, and no more than needed.'"

Maher compared that language to Karl Marx.

"If that was any closer to Karl Marx's dictum, 'From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs,' they'd be sued for plagiarism."

He also referenced statements made by New York mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani.

"Not to leave any doubt, New York Mayor Mondani once tweeted Karl Marx's words exactly, they're not trying to hide it."

Maher also criticized political commentator Hasan Piker.

"Their most popular influencer, Hassan Piker, thinks communism is so groovy."

He added that Piker "laments the fall of the two of the most murderous regimes in history, the Soviet Union and Chairman Mao's China."

Maher then turned to comments he attributed to Mamdani adviser Sia Weaver.

"Mamdani's aide, his top aide, Cia Weaver, said, 'If you don't believe in the government's sacred right to seize property, it's over and impoverish the white middle class.'"

He responded by asking, "What? That's a that's a goal."

Maher also cited congressional candidate Darializa Chevalier

"One of the new soon-to-be Democratic Congresspeople, Darlezia Chevalier, supports seizing all properties from landlords, and said seize the means of production."

He noted that Mamdani has expressed a similar goal.

"Mamdani has said the end goal is seizing the means of production."

Maher concluded, "I think they want to seize the means of production."

He argued that such positions amount to communism.

"Now maybe you missed that in school or missed school altogether, but that's communism."

Maher added, "That's communism, which we tried and it doesn't work."

While acknowledging that political parties evolve over time, Maher argued that the DSA itself has shifted.

"The DSA itself has switched, even five years ago. It shunned communists."

He continued, "That changed."

According to Maher, the Marxist Unity Group has become increasingly influential within the organization.

"Now the coalition within the DSA, called the Marxist Unity Group, is in ascendance."

He pointed to one of its stated goals.

"Our commitment is to the long-term struggle for a fully liberated, classless society."

Maher summarized that objective in one word.

"In a word, communism."

He added that Weaver had publicly encouraged voters to support communists.

"What do they have to do? Tweet out, elect more communists? Oh yeah, see a weaver did that."

Maher argued that the DSA's influence is spreading throughout the Democratic Party.

"You know what's being colonized now? The Democratic Party."

He referenced a pledge circulated by two Democratic members of Congress affirming support for capitalism, law enforcement, and America.

"It said, 'We are capitalists, not socialists. We want safety, not lawlessness. We are proud, not ashamed of America.'"

Maher said only a handful of Democrats signed it.

"You know how many did? Eight. Eight out of 212."

He argued that increasingly more candidates openly support eliminating traditional institutions.

"People are actually getting elected now who literally don't think we should have police or prisons or borders."

Maher also cited comments from Francesca Hong.

"Francesca Hong, yet another major Democratic candidate who's all in on abolishing abolishing the police and is running for governor of Wisconsin, says, 'I think that my perfect world would be a world without prisons, because we all see the humanity in one another, and then we know nobody's disposable.'"

Maher responded, "Well, murder victims are."

He also referenced longtime Democratic strategist James Carville.

"No wonder that the most true blue Democrat ever, James Carville, says there's just some shit I can't be in the same tent with."

Maher added, "Yeah, Carvel said I'm done. I'm not in that fucking political party."

Contrasting that with California Gov. Gavin Newsom's view that the Democratic Party is a "big tent," Maher joked, "Well, you know what else you find in a tent? Clowns."

Maher concluded by saying the party's direction has changed his own political outlook.

"I would vote for Sarah Palin before this shit."

He added, "She's a bimbo, but if you asked her to come up with something she likes about America, she could do it. You betcha! Thank you very much."
