Former Vice President Kamala Harris called Tuesday for an independent investigation into the fatal shooting of a Colombian national during an Immigration and Customs Enforcement operation in Maine, prompting widespread responses on social media and renewed attention to the circumstances surrounding the incident, as reported by the New York Post.

Harris commented on the death of 26-year-old Joan Sebastian Guerrero, whom the Department of Homeland Security identified as an illegal immigrant.

According to DHS, Guerrero was killed during an ICE enforcement operation in Biddeford, Maine, on Monday after allegedly attempting to flee in a vehicle.

"Joan Sebastian Guerrero should still be alive," Harris wrote on X.

She continued, "This is the second time in a week that ICE agents have killed someone who — by their own admission — was not the subject of their operation. Now Sebastian is dead, his killing witnessed by his three-year-old daughter wearing her Bluey pajamas."

"This cannot be acceptable in America."

Harris also called for "an immediate, independent, and transparent investigation" into the shooting.

"Anyone responsible for wrongdoing must be held accountable," she wrote.

Her comments drew immediate responses online, including criticism from users who referenced her role overseeing aspects of the Biden administration's response to migration at the southern border.

One user wrote, "I will start giving a f–k" about illegal immigrants killed by ICE "when Democrats start giving a f–k about Americans killed by illegals."

Another wrote, "Someone needs to be investigated – namely the two individuals who opened our borders up for 4 YEARS, allowing the worst of the worst in here to rob, and k*ll us. Where is the accountability for THAT? You and ol' Joey should be in prison."

A third user commented, "As border czar, you are responsible for all the deaths caused by illegals crossing the border during your time as VP."

During the Biden administration, an average of approximately 2.4 million migrants entered the United States each year, according to the source article, which states that the period represented the largest migrant surge in the nation's history and included many illegal border crossings.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, ICE officers had been conducting surveillance Monday morning at the last known address of an illegal immigrant with a deportation order in Biddeford, Maine.

DHS said Guerrero left the residence in a vehicle and refused to stop when federal officers attempted to detain him.

"The vehicle attempted to flee the scene and, fearing for public safety, an officer discharged his weapon," DHS said in a statement.

"The driver of the vehicle was struck, and emergency services were immediately contacted. He passed away from his injuries."

An eyewitness also described the encounter.

Lucas Scott, 18, told the Portland Press Herald that officers wearing green vests surrounded the vehicle and drew their weapons. Scott said the driver then appeared to drive toward the officers.

"The car was put into drive and was trying to hit the ICE officer," Scott said, adding that an agent fired roughly four shots.

According to Presente! Maine, a Portland-based aid organization, Guerrero had authorization to work in the United States and had been issued a Social Security number.

The Department of Homeland Security said its Office of Inspector General will investigate the shooting. The incident has also prompted protests in Maine.

The Maine shooting followed another fatal ICE-related shooting in Houston the previous week that also prompted comments from Harris.

"Lorenzo Salgado Araujo's family called him 'El mundo entero' — the whole world," Harris wrote on X.

Referring to that incident, she said Araujo was "shot and killed by ICE agents on his way to work," adding that she was "outraged by the horrific and cruel actions of ICE under the Trump Administration."

"Doug and my prayers are with Lorenzo's wife, his three sons, and all those who loved and knew him," Harris wrote.

"I join his son Ronaldo in calling for an immediate, independent, and transparent investigation."
