A man identified by federal officials as a Mexican national who was in the United States illegally died Tuesday after an encounter with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers in Houston, Texas, according to the Department of Homeland Security, as reported by Townhall.

Federal authorities said the incident occurred Tuesday morning during an attempted enforcement operation.

ICE officers were attempting to stop the man when, according to officials, he failed to comply with verbal commands and attempted to flee.

Authorities said the situation escalated when the suspect allegedly drove his vehicle into an ICE vehicle before attempting to strike an ICE officer with the vehicle.

According to DHS, the officer discharged a firearm in response to the threat. The suspect was struck during the confrontation.

Emergency medical personnel responded to the scene, and the man was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Federal officials have not publicly released the man's identity.

The Department of Homeland Security said the incident remains under investigation.
