CNN analyst Harry Enten said the Republican Party has shifted decisively away from the George W. Bush era and toward President Trump’s leadership, pointing to recent election results and polling that show GOP voters overwhelmingly aligned with Trump.
Enten discussed the shift during an exchange with Kate Bolduan after Texas Sen. John Cornyn suffered what Enten described as a historic defeat.
“We have seen this over and over and over again,” Enten said. “When a Republican goes up against Donald Trump, or Donald Trump really goes up against them, it doesn't end too well for that Republican senator.”
Enten compared Cornyn’s loss to the recent political troubles facing Sen. Bill Cassidy, saying both reflected the consequences for Republicans who fall out of step with Trump-aligned voters.

“We saw just a few weeks ago with Bill Cassidy getting what, just 25% of it, which was the lowest vote share total for any senator, incumbent senator,” Enten said.
He then described Cornyn’s defeat as historically significant.
“And now, when looking at the margin again, breaking history, the 28 point loss for John Cornyn, the worst for a Republican center since at least World War 2, Kate Bolduan, that is how historic it was,” Enten said.
Bolduan noted Cornyn’s ties to the older Texas Republican establishment and asked how much the party had changed since the Bush era.

“That is, that fits into historic,” Bolduan said. “So Cornyn is kind of, if you were to say, like, a Bush era Texas Republican. How much has the party shifted from, from the Bush era, if you will, since Trump has come into the..”
Enten said the answer was clear: the Bush-era Republican Party no longer defines GOP politics.
“Yeah, I mean, look, John Cornyn was first elected back in 2002 and I will just tell you that the George W. Bush era of the Republican Party is simply put, it is dead,” Enten said.
“It is dead, and this was the capstone to it, and Donald Trump, Republican Party is very much alive,” Enten added.

“He is the leader of the Republican Party.”
Enten pointed to polling on net favorability among Republican voters to show the scale of the shift.
“I just want you to look here,” Enten said. “I mean, this just tells you everything that you need to know, which is the net favorable rating with the GOP.”
He said Bush once held a strong positive rating with Republicans before Trump entered the 2016 race.
“You have Donald Trump, you have George W. Bush,” Enten said. “Before Donald Trump declared back in May of 2015 look at this: George W. Bush's net favorable rating was plus 58 points. Donald Trump was 45 points underwater with Republicans.”
Enten said Trump has since gained more than 100 points in net favorability among GOP voters.
“Look at this... over 100 point shift,” Enten said.
“I do believe Donald Trump is now at plus 61 that's over 100 point shift in the positive direction for Trump.”

Bush, meanwhile, has dropped sharply among Republican voters.
“And look at what happened to George W. Bush, he dropped by 40 points from plus 58 to plus 17,” Enten said.
Enten said Cornyn’s defeat in Texas illustrated the shift in Bush’s own political backyard.
“So George W. Bush has fallen through the floor since Donald Trump, of course, first really appeared on the political scene, first ran for president for the Republican nomination back in 2015 declaring in June of 2015,” Enten said.
“While George W. Bush simply put, as I said, his Republican party is dead.”
Enten said GOP voters remain firmly behind Trump.
“Republican voters are very lukewarm on him, and Republican voters are still very hot to trot on Donald Trump,” Enten said.
“And you saw that in George W. Bush's home state of Texas on Tuesday night with John Cornyn, of course, a Bush Air Republican, going down to a historic defeat.”

“The bottom line is that Donald Trump, it's his party across the political map, even in George W. Bush's backyard,” Enten added.
Bolduan said voters appeared to side with Trump after he accused Cornyn of insufficient loyalty.
“One thing you see in the numbers, one thing you heard we heard from voters on the actual day on election day, there was that they're going with Trump,” Bolduan said.
“Trump had accused Cornyn of not being loyal enough, and they were going with Trump when they were going to be supporting Paxton.”
She then asked how loyal Republican voters want elected officials to be to President Trump.
“How much like that begs the question of, like, how loyal do Republican voters want their electeds to be to President Trump?” Bolduan asked.
Enten said polling shows a clear answer.
“Yeah, I think when you see this over 100 point shift towards Donald Trump, I mean, that's just crazy, but then you just ask the Republican voters, what do they want?” Enten said. “What do they want from their members of Congress?”

According to Enten, 80% of GOP voters want congressional Republicans to work more closely with Trump, while only 13% want them to stand up to him.
“GOP voters want congressional GOP to do more to work with Trump,” Enten said. “80% four and five, just 13% want him to do more to stand up to Trump.”
Enten said those numbers show Trump’s control of the party.
“When 80% plus of the party is with you on any particular question, you know you own the party,” Enten said.
“This is, as I said, Donald Trump's Republican Party, and it's George W. Bush that simply put that Republican party is dead. It's in the graveyard.”
Bolduan closed the segment by saying the data gave another view of the meaning of Tuesday’s results.
“It's really another interesting look through the numbers at what Tuesday meant today,” Bolduan said. “Thanks, Harry.”
