The dog was left inside the vehicle. Police said the animal moved around in the rear seat area and came into contact with a shotgun that had been stored inside the truck.
Authorities indicated that the shotgun appeared to have a live round in the chamber and discharged after being triggered.
The blast went through the vehicle’s front passenger-side door before traveling out of the parking lot. Police said it struck a woman who was stopped at a nearby traffic light several yards away.
According to KNOP, a shotgun pellet struck the upper portion of the woman’s right arm while her arm was resting outside the window of her vehicle.

Police said the situation was initially reported as involving a BB gun. Responding officers were later informed that the incident involved a shotgun, according to the report.
Investigators also noted damage to the truck’s passenger-side door that was consistent with a shotgun blast, KNOP reported.
The Scottsbluff Police Department is investigating the incident. Fox News Digital reported that it reached out to the Scottsbluff Police Department for more information.
The case drew attention because of the unusual circumstances involving a dog, a loaded shotgun, a gas station stop, and an unrelated woman injured while sitting at a nearby traffic light.
Police did not report additional injuries and said the woman’s wound was not considered life-threatening.
The Scottsbluff Police Department will continue to investigate the incident.
