Unidentified drones were detected flying above a U.S. Army installation in Washington, D.C., where Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth maintain residences, according to a report published Wednesday by The Washington Post.
The report, citing three individuals briefed on the matter, stated that U.S. officials observed the drones operating over Fort McNair. According to two of those individuals, officials have not determined where the drones originated.
As The New York Post reported, the presence of the drones prompted internal discussions among officials about whether to relocate Rubio and Hegseth from the base.

However, both officials have not been moved, according to a senior administration official cited in the report.
Fort McNair, located in Washington, D.C., is a U.S. Army post that houses senior military and government personnel, including top Cabinet officials.
The report indicated that the incident raised concerns within the administration, particularly given the location and the presence of high-ranking officials on the base.
According to the newspaper, the U.S. military has been increasing monitoring of potential threats amid heightened alert levels tied to the ongoing war involving the United States and Israel against Iran.

The report noted that security officials are paying closer attention to aerial activity in sensitive areas as a result of the broader geopolitical situation.
Reuters reported that it was unable to independently verify the details of the Washington Post report at the time of publication.
The Pentagon and the U.S. State Department did not respond to requests for comment regarding the reported drone activity.
Chief Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell declined to provide specific details about the situation when contacted by The Washington Post.
“The department cannot comment on the secretary’s [Hegseth’s] movements for security reasons, and reporting on such movements is grossly irresponsible,” Parnell told the outlet.

The report did not indicate how long the drones were present over Fort McNair or whether any defensive measures were taken in response.
It also did not specify whether the drones were believed to be operated by foreign actors, domestic individuals, or unknown entities.
The detection of drones over a military installation that houses senior U.S. officials comes amid increasing attention to aerial surveillance and security risks involving unmanned systems.
Federal authorities have previously raised concerns about unauthorized drone activity near sensitive government and military sites.
The situation remains under review as officials continue efforts to determine the origin and intent of the drones observed over the installation.
