A U.S. Marshal and an illegal alien detainee were shot Tuesday during a federal immigration operation in Los Angeles, authorities confirmed.
The incident occurred when federal agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) surrounded a target vehicle during an enforcement operation.
According to Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin, the suspect driving the vehicle attempted to flee by ramming multiple federal vehicles before agents opened fire.
Sources within ICE and HSI told Fox News that the gunfire exchange resulted in a U.S. Marshal being struck in the hand, apparently by a bullet ricochet.
The illegal alien inside the vehicle was also hit once in the elbow. Both individuals were transported to a nearby hospital and are expected to recover.
“These are the consequences of conduct and rhetoric by sanctuary politicians and activists who urge illegal aliens to resist arrest,” the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said in a statement following the incident.
“Resisting arrest puts the safety of illegal aliens, law enforcement, and the public at risk.”

The department cited a significant rise in assaults against federal agents during enforcement actions.
“Our law enforcement officers are facing a more than 1000% increase in assaults against them including vehicle rammings by illegal aliens,” DHS added.
“We are once again calling on sanctuary politicians, agitators, and the media to turn the temperature down and stop calling for violence and resistance against ICE law enforcement.”

The Los Angeles operation came just days after the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors declared a local “state of emergency” in response to federal immigration raids.
County officials claimed that local businesses were being forced to close during the operations.
The declaration, however, is largely symbolic; the Supreme Court has already overturned previous lower-court rulings that attempted to block ICE raids in Los Angeles and other sanctuary jurisdictions.
Tuesday’s shooting adds to a growing list of violent incidents targeting federal law enforcement personnel in recent weeks.

On September 24, two illegal alien detainees were killed and another was seriously injured after a far-left gunman opened fire on an ICE detention facility in Dallas from a nearby rooftop.
The shooter, who left behind shell casings with anti-ICE messages written on them, later turned the gun on himself.
In another case earlier this month, federal agents were attacked in Chicago during an ambush-style assault.
Agents reportedly came under fire after being targeted by armed suspects using vehicles to ram an ICE and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) convoy.
DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin confirmed that one of the attackers, identified as Marimar Martinez, was shot and received medical treatment after the confrontation.
Prosecutors also identified Anthony Ian Santos Ruiz as a co-conspirator in the attack.
Both suspects allegedly used vehicles to strike ICE and CBP agents during the assault.
Multiple whistleblowers and internal documents later revealed that the Chicago Police Department was ordered not to respond to the scene or acknowledge the incident over police radio traffic.
The rise in violent attacks against federal officers has prompted renewed warnings from federal agencies about the risks posed by anti-ICE rhetoric and sanctuary policies.
DHS officials have maintained that such policies embolden illegal aliens to resist arrest and obstruct lawful enforcement operations, creating greater danger for both officers and civilians.
As of Tuesday night, the U.S. Marshal and the detainee injured in the Los Angeles operation remained hospitalized in stable condition.
